The Tutankhamun sarcophagus; The remains of Tutankhammon rested in a large quartzite sarcophagum, which contained three consecutive coffins until it reached the mummy of the young pharaoh.
The first of them, gold-rolled pine wood; the second, similar; while the latter, and smaller than the former, is solid gold.
This latest coffin is the most iconic of all and its beauty is of immeasurable value.
By removing the lid of the large stone sarcophagus, the first of the masterpieces of Egyptology was uncovered: the sarcophagum (anthropomorphic form) of wood and gold.
As if it were a traditional Russian box (the “matrioskas” or mamushkas”) inside that sarcophagus was another barely smaller, also of wood and gold.
And then, another smaller one, finely ornate, ornate and completely gold surprise from Howard Carter.
Until opening the last of the sarcophagus, Carter was finally able to behold Pharaoh’s mummy.
