Ringo Starr reveals Barry Keoghan is set to play him in an upcoming Beatles biopic and is already taking drumming lessons for the iconic role

Barry Keoghan will play Beatles legend Ringo Starr in an upcoming Beatles biopic.

The news was shared by the legendary drummer himself who confirmed that Barry, 32, would be playing him on-screen in a film about the Beatles from his perspective.

Speaking about the project with Entertainment Tonight, Ringo said: ‘I think it’s great. I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many.’

Barry has soared to stardom in recent years thanks to The Banshees of Inisherin and Saltburn but this may prove his most ambitious part yet.

Director Sam Mendes is producing four films from each of the Beatles’ perspectives as Ringo, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison experiences are retold.

Mendes said: ‘I’m honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time and excited to challenge the notion of what consтιтutes a trip to the movies.’

The rights to the music and lives of the band have been provided by the surviving band members and the estates of their deceased bandmates.

Although the band members and families have been involved, producer Pippa Harrison has insisted there is ‘nothing off limits and no sense of the band wanting him to tell a particular ‘authorised’ version of their rise to success’.

Fellow Irish actor Paul Mescal has also been attached to the film and is reportedly set to play Paul McCartney.

Gladiator II star Paul recently told GQ magazine: ‘I would love to be involved, but there’s nothing set in stone.’

Harris Dickinson is rumoured to be cast as John Lennon, but refused to confirm or deny the speculation in a recent Dazed magazine interview.

He said: ‘There’s nothing I can say about that. It might not be true, it might be, I don’t know… there’s a speculation culture.’

Joseph Quinn is reportedly set to take to screens as George Harrison in the series of Beatles biopics.

The actor, 30, will be undertaking a role that is worlds away from the eccentric Hawkins High School student, as he steps into the shoes of the legendary guitarist for four films.

According to The Sun, the quartet of films will tell the story of the Liverpool-based band from each member’s perspective – and Joseph has been handpicked by director Sam to appear in all of them.

A source told the publication: ‘Joe is an incredible actor. It’s a mᴀssive role, but Sam is delighted to have him on board.’

The monumental film series will be the first time Apple Corps Ltd, The Beatles, and the families of John Lennon and George, have all agreed to hand over full life-story and music rights for a scripted movie.

George died in November 2001 at the age of 58 following a battle with cancer. MailOnline has contacted representatives for Joseph Quinn for comment.

It comes after another source said: ‘Sam has a mammoth task on his hands, but Paul and Ringo trust him to do them justice.

‘The films will all be inter-connecting and will tell the story of the band from each of the group’s perspectives.’

‘It’s likely Sam will find four British rising stars to step into their shoes. But people are already talking about actors such as Barry Keoghan and Will Sharpe.’

It follows the news that a new documentary focusing on how The Beatles cracked America is coming to Apple+.

The British rock band – which consisted of Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, John Lennon and George Harrison – took the US by storm after a televised concert pulled in 73 million viewers.

The majority of their releases across the pond hit the top spot on the charts, and now insiders have claimed that a new doc will explore how they Hey Jude hitmakers ‘paved the way’ for other successful acts from the UK.

A source told The Sun: ‘Apple TV+ have a documentary coming out which looks back at their rise — and how the band paved the way for acts like the Rolling Stones when it came to making it big in America.

‘Beatlemania was crazy in the UK, but the Americans gave our fans a run for their money.

‘People will remember the hysteria that took over the US when The Beatles arrived, and the incredible scenes where thousands of teenagers turned up to see them wherever they went.’

The Let It Be singers are generally considered to be one of the few English acts to have found success in the US, a handful of others being the Spice Girls, Adele and Amy Winehouse.

The insider explained to the outlet that the time explored in the documentary is simply a ‘moment in music history’ and described the new film as ‘must-see’ television.

It is thought that the new documentary will launch over Thanksgiving weekend on November 28.

Season four of Stranger Things saw Joseph catapult into fame with the introduction of Eddie, who is the leader of the Hellfire Club, known for his 1980’s long hairstyle and punky clothing.

But in a tragic twist of fate, the character’s stint was short-lived – as he heroically sacrificed himself to save his friends.

Joseph went on to star in A Quiet Place: Day One and will next appear in Gladiator II and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
