The Kansas City Chiefs’ first defeat of the season was also a financial loss for Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes, 29, was fined $14,069 by the National Football League on Saturday, November 23, for making a “violent gesture” during the Chiefs 30-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, November 17.
In the 4th quarter of the game, the Chiefs quarterback was caught by CBS cameras pantomiming use of a sH๏τgun after a big play. The league deems such an action as unsportsmanlike conduct.
“To protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve compeтιтive balance and game integrity, the NFL and NFL Players ᴀssociation have agreed on a set of game-related rules violations that may result in accountability measures,” the NFL explains on their website under “Gameday Accountability.”

The fine is not the first time Mahomes has been reprimanded by the league for his actions. In December 2023, the two-time NFL MVP was fined $50,000 for being publicity critical of the officials, also in a loss to the Bills.

“I had outbursts on the sideline and everybody saw it on a big game, and so there’s going to be consequences to that,” Mahomes told reporters after the fine was levied. “Now you’ve just got to live with those consequences, learn from it, become better from it and not try to let that happen again. But we kind of just kept it moving.”
Following this season’s loss to the Bills, Mahomes and the Chiefs bounced back with a 30-27 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, November 24.
Mahomes, however, was less than satisfied after his team needed to rely on another last-second field goal to emerge victorious.
“You want to have some blowouts,” Mahomes told reporters after Chiefs kicker Spencer Shrader nailed a 31-yard kick as time expired. “You want to be a little calmer in the fourth quarter. I’ve always said it can be a good thing as you get to the playoffs and later in the season, just knowing that you’ve been in those moments before and knowing how to kind of attack it.”

Mahomes added, “But I would love to win a game [before] the very last play.”

Shrader, 25, filling in for the injured Harrison Butker, reflected on his big moment after the game.
“I knew that I’d be getting an opportunity, so I just tried to stay calm, understanding that it was going to come at some point,” Shrader told reporters. “Then when it did come I was ready. That comes from a belief in the team that they’re going to get you in that situation, and then you go out there and just knock it through.”
The Chiefs return to action on Friday, November 29 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
