Meanwhile, Watford supporters shared footage on X – formerly known a as Twitter. One wrote: ‘Watford fans singing about Coleen Rooney away at Plymouth tonight.’ The user, @rio_woolf ended his post with a laughing emoji.

Female football fans were left furious at the chants, which were repeated on several occasions throughout the game.

‘It’s like something from the 1970s, it’s so misogynistic.’

Rooney, who became manager of the Devon side at the beginning of the season was left ecstatic when his side scored a last minute equaliser to make it a 2-2 draw against high-flying Watford.

A source close to the Rooneys said: ‘With Coleen going into the jungle, both she and Wayne knew their relationship would come under scrutiny and be talked about a lot.

‘But this is just gross.’

Wayne, 39, revealed he was missing his wife of 16 years ‘so much’ as the past two weeks have been they haven’t spoken since meeting as teenagers on their council estate of Croxteth in Liverpool.

The former Manchester United star appeared on jungle spin off show I’m A Celebrity: Unpacked on Saturday night, and said: ‘We are missing her so much and it’s been the longest I’ve been without speaking to her since we were kids.

‘For the children, it’s difficult obviously, because not being able to speak to their mum.

‘Coleen’s parents are helping out mᴀssively because obviously, I’m over in Plymouth living there at the minute with my work.

‘There’s a good team looking after the kids and making sure everything is done with the children. We’re missing her but we’re enjoying watching her as well.’

A spokesperson for Plymouth Argyle said: ‘We are aware of the audible chants referencing Head Coach Wayne Rooney’s wife, Coleen, from Watford fans on Friday night.

‘We completely condemn chanting of this nature and are particularly appalled as Friday’s game was our match in partnership with charities, Trevi, who work tirelessly to provide safe spaces for females recovering from abuse and violence, and M.A.N: Culture, a growing ‘Male Allyship Network’ who provide the space to have honest conversations about masculinity and male violence against women.

‘Clearly incidents such as these show more work needs to be done, and as an inclusive, community centric football club we will continue to educate football fans who visit Home Park.’

Watford have been also contacted for comment.
