Ramesses II, was the third pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt, who reigned for 66 years, from 1279 BCE to 1213 BCE.
He is often remembered as the greatest and most powerful pharaoh of the New Kingdom, which in turn is the peak period of ancient Egypt.
He was buried in tomb KV7 in the Valley of the Kings near Thebes, but his body was later transferred to a royal mummy cache where it was discovered in 1881. His mummy was until recently on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and, as of 2021, in the new Grand Egyptian Museum in the same city.
