The actress discussed the comfort she takes in feeling like they got the message of the first series ‘right’ after exploring the theme of coercive control.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Times, Sharon said: ‘We’ve seen domestic violence dramatised, but the coercive control aspect – the isolation, the financial control – those things are less explored.’

‘Having had women contact me whose sisters, mothers, daughters and friends have been through that, it was such a relief to feel like we got it right, and to know that seeing that story out there made them feel less like they were f***ing crazy.’
Sharon, who was joined by co-stars Anne-Marie Duff and Eve in the interview, spoke about the ‘unexpected bonus’ in finding friendship with the cast.
‘There’s a real sense of being supportive of each others’ endeavours. We miss each other [now that filming has ended], and we’re getting giddy for doing the press, so we all get to be together again. It’s a lovely feeling. It was an unexpected bonus that came from making this series, getting to be friends with all those girls.’
‘That was one thing I thought about a lot when we were considering the second series. Having researched women who’ve killed their partners and ended up in prison being punished, it doesn’t mean that they stop loving that person.’
‘As well as capturing the idea of their conscience and their guilt, there’s the question of who looks after these women, who are victims themselves. How do you move on from that?’
Elsewhere, Anne-Marie spoke on her portrayal of coercive control in the series and reaching out to national charities working to end domestic abuse.
The actress played Grace Williams, who killed her husband JP after suffering years of coercive control at his hand during their marriage.
Discussing the responsibility of portraying her story on screen, she said: ‘Both Claes [Bang, who played JP] and I were committed to telling this story properly. We had to because if we didn’t make it as true as possible, the audience would not have been willing the sisters to kill him.’

There will undoubtedly have been more than one person who has found themselves in a similar situation, and just to hear their story being told will be really powerful for them. So you have to serve it well.’
