Cheryl promotes Girls Aloud’s upcoming ITV show in new interview with her bandmates as they reveal what’s next for the reunited group

Girls Aloud have sat down for a new interview with ITV ahead of the premiere of The Girls Aloud Show: Live at The O2, London, which will air on Sunday – on what would’ve been their late bandmate Sarah Harding’s 43rd birthday.

An interview which Cheryl recorded with her bandmates Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh and Ben Shephard on October 8 before her ex partner Liam Payne’s death on October 16, has been released on ITVX ahead of the anticipated concert film.

The band excitedly discussed their incredible reunion tour which saw them play 30 shows across the UK and Ireland.

Talking to Ben, the singers gushed that they never thought they would reunite ‘at our age.’

‘The music industry is such a young place, that when you’re that young and you’re shrouded in that ageism you just think we could never possibly do that at that age,’ explained Nicola.

‘Loads of my friends have been inspired by us,’ added Kimberley as Cheryl pointed out ‘how fortunate that we still can, 22 years later.’

Cheryl, mum to son Bear, seven, went on to admit that ‘we became a bit cooler’ with their kids as they joined them on tour.

The main motivation for the reunion tour though was to ‘fulfil Sarah’s dream’, the band explained during the interview, following their beloved bandmate’s death from breast cancer three years ago.

‘We were really conscious the whole time of making sure it wasn’t too sad because she wasn’t a sad character, she was the bubbliest one of us all,’ said Cheryl.

‘We wanted to keep her spirit amongst it as well as representing her and having her there throughout the show, but not in a sad way. The situation is sad enough.’

The girls also discussed what’s next for the reunited band. Cheryl insisted that while ‘we’re catching our breath, one thing I have learnt in my infinite wisdom, at my ripe age, is that you can genuinely never say never.’

‘I don’t think we saw ourselves doing this tour,’ added Nicola. ‘At one time, we didn’t think we could see us doing this.’

As well as the release of their concert film on Sunday, Girls Aloud are also back in the charts this week with the official Children In Need single.

Fans have been left in tears as they listened to their new emotional song on Wednesday which featured Sarah’s lead vocals.

20 years after Girls Aloud released I’ll Stand By You for BBC Children In Need, the iconic band are set to release a brand-new version of the track, with their beloved Sarah featuring exclusively on lead vocals throughout.

Hearing the song on Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 breakfast show for the first time, fans rushed to X and Instagram to say they couldn’t stop ‘sobbing’ while listening.

‘Just listened in and had a little cry, for some reason hearing this version now hit me even more than seeing it on tour! Such a beautiful tribute to Sarah.’

‘Did not expect to be crying this morning; This is amazing news. What a way to honour Sarah, thank you for giving us this version’.

‘9:15 AM and sobbing at I’ll stand by you Sarah’s version so so so beautiful so glad it’s the official children in need song’.

Sarah’s vocals were discovered in the Girls Aloud vault while the band were pulling together archive material for their sell-out The Girls Aloud Show arena tour earlier this year.

A freshly produced studio version will now be released on November 15 as a special charity single to support BBC Children In Need.

The Girls Aloud Show: Live at The O2 will be broadcast on ITV1 on Sunday November 17 at 8pm.
