EXCLUSIVE: What’s really going with Euphoria? Cancelation rumors spark after Zendaya is cast in Christopher Nolan film

Zendaya has ensured that her role in the new Christopher Nolan movie will not disrupt plans to film Euphoria season three, DailyMail.com can reveal.

It was confirmed last week that the former Disney channel star has joined the likes of Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon and her boyfriend Tom Holland in an upcoming project with Universal Studios, per The Hollywood Reporter.

News of the 28-year-old’s casting led some fans to speculate a potential clash in filming schedules could mean yet another delay in the long-awaited final season of the HBO show.

However, insiders have confirmed to DailyMail.com that the show will be back in production in 2025 as planned – with Zendaya being ‘very excited’ to bring her character Rue’s story to a close.

‘Euphoria is moving forward; the scripts are done, and everyone is ready to make season three the best one yet,’ the insider stated. ‘They owe that to themselves and the fans.’

The insider noted that news of Zendaya’s star-studded new project did cause some concern for staffers on the production, who have seen the show’s return pushed back on multiple occasions since February 2022.

‘The show isn’t getting canceled. The rumor started off after Zendaya was cast for the next Christopher Nolan film,’ the insider said.

‘Since Euphoria has been delayed for so long, people who were geared to work on the show when they come back this January thought and some still do, that it will yet again be delayed from filming because Zendaya might have to work on Nolan’s film at the same time.’

The insider continued: ‘But as of right now, schedules are working so she is able to do both. The last Euphoria episode ever filmed was in December of 2021, so you can imagine what some crew are thinking.

‘But Zendaya is very excited about continuing the story, the cast and crew are excited to get it off the ground because [creator Sam Levinson] has worked so hard on it and HBO is ready for it to come back.’

Indeed, the network also shutdown recent claims that the hit drama series — which stars the likes of Maude Apatow, Jacob Elordi and Sydney Sweeney — could be canceled.

On Saturday, a representative for HBO told The Independent: ‘Euphoria is going in to production in 2025. Nothing has changed.’

Elsewhere, a separate source explained how director and showrunner Sam Levinson has been all hands on deck with the script for the final series – despite calls for him to expand his writer’s room to avoid some previous criticisms of the season two plot as well as his widely-panned project, The Idol.

The source stated: ‘As Sam focuses on directing, producing and writing, it works way better when he is a one-man gang.

‘That is why The Idol didn’t work; he didn’t direct it from the start but that is why it works for Euphoria, he is one of these kids, he was an addict, he’s not afraid to try things but once others try to control his art, it goes off the rails, if he can be his own one man army, it works and that has been proven.’

The source continued: ‘The next season will be all from him, so it will be great and when he is left to doing what he needs to do, it will always work out.’

Like others who worked on the series, Levinson was rocked by the death of 25-year-old Angus Cloud, who played Fezco, in July 2023 from an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine and other drugs.

The heartbreak continued when producer Kevin Turen died, aged 44, just five months later in December, from multiple heart issues.

Earlier last month, Zendaya shared a positive update with fans when she confirmed that the forthcoming season will see the characters leave high school — as the last season was released in January 2022.

She explained: ‘It’s important because there’s only so much high school drama you can deal with, and then she cheats on her boyfriend again!’

Though exact details surrounding the upcoming season’s plot is being kept under wraps, she also shared that the series will return after a time jump.

‘I don’t actually know much about what is happening,’ the Dune actress said, despite being an executive producer on the series.

‘I don’t quite know exactly what the season is going to look like, but I do know that the time jump is happening.’

Euphoria has also proven to be a career launching pad for several cast members, as well as helping Levinson make his name.

Meanwhile, Zendaya appears set to follow up the recent success of her films Challengers and Dune: Part Two with her role in the new Nolan project.

Plot details are currently under wraps, but Nolan will also be writing the script for the movie which is set to release in July 2026.

Filming is slated to begin next year, and it will be Zendaya’s first time working with Nolan – who is known for other projects such as Oppenheimer, Inception, Dunkirk and Tenet.
