Netflix fans rave over ‘gripping’ crime thriller based on true story ‘full of twists and turns’ – praising ‘excellent acting and an unpredictable ending’

Netflix fans are raving over a ‘gripping’ crime thriller based on a true story which is ‘full of twists and turns’ and have praised the ‘excellent acting and an unpredictable ending’.

Six-part drama, Clean Sweep, first aired in Ireland last year but was added to Netflix last week and has since sH๏τ up the charts to become the fifth most popular programme in the UK.

The show follows a suburban stay-at-home mother-of-three Shelly Mohan, played by Charlene McKenna, as her seemingly perfect life is threatened when her past comes back to haunt her.

When Shelly’s old partner-in-crime, Charlie, resurfaces she retaliates by murdering him in a frenzied attempt to erase her troubled history.

But things get even more complicated when her detective husband Jason, played by Barry Ward, is put in charge of the investigation.

Viewers demanded a second season after it first aired in 2023 and gushed over Charlene McKenna’s ‘outstanding performance’, the ‘intriguing characters’ and ‘unusual plot’.

One review on Rotten Tomatoes said: ‘My husband and I both thought this was a gripping and series with intriguing characters. Storylines and people like winding garden paths – you just wanted to find you more around each turn. Really hoping there is a season 2 – would love to get deeper into the story lines and character stories – surely and fingers crossed there will be.’

One fan wrote: ‘Charlene McKenna delivers another outstanding performance — this time as an ordinary mum with a dark past that comes back to haunt her. Barry Ward is great as her unsuspecting husband.’

Another read: ‘Great show. Interesting and unusual plot. Charlene McKenna is excellent.’

Those who have recently discovered Clean Sweep since it was added to Netflix have taken to social media to sing its praises.

One person wrote: ‘Been watching Clean Sweep on Netflix, it’s so good and no idea how it’s gonna end. Off to shop for milk, to make it last a little longer.’

Another said: ‘A well-scripted family-based crime drama on Netflix and iPlayer. The dialogue between the mother and children is particularly realistic, with excellent acting.’

Clean Sweep isn’t the only Netflix show to win over viewers in recent weeks.

Legal thriller Your Honor has also amᴀssed a whopping fanbase and been dubbed ‘the best show [fans] have ever watched.’

Clean Sweep is available to stream on Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
