The much-anticipated film Wicked, from director Jon M. Chu, made its world premiere at the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia last week, and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles on Saturday.
In between those days, and moving forward to the widespread release in theaters, it’s all about the promotional push through interviews, appearances, and social media posts.
While in the midst of promo mode, the two stars of the film, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, issued apologizes for all the tears they’ve been shedding as they talk about their friendship and the film.
‘We’ve cried 500 times today. And honestly, this is a PSA. So sorry guys,’ Grande, 31, could be heard saying in a give-and-take with Erivo in a video shared by E! News.
‘It is what it is,’ her British-born co-star added. ‘There’s just nothing we can do about it.’
Cynthia Erivo, 37, and Ariana Grande, 31, have been issuing apologies for all the crying they’ve been doing while promoting Wicked and talking about their budding friendship
The two stars of Wicked formed a close friendship and bond since being named as part of the cast in late 2021; they are seen on the red carpet for the LA premiere
Grande jumped back in: ‘I can’t imagine, and you know what? If you’re going to comment saying how annoying it is, I’ll say it first,’ she said sitting next to Erivo for an interview. ‘I said it first. I’m annoyed. I’m tired. My tear ducts… I’m tired, emotionally tired.’
‘We’ve come through a mᴀssive, mᴀssive thing and we’ve really stuck together,’ Erivo, 37, explained.

‘Yeah, the stuff you don’t see is the most special stuff, Ariana added while the two ladies sounded like old friends or a married couple.
They would apologize again when Erivo and Grande, who play Elphaba Thropp/Wicked Witch Of The West and Glinda The Good Witch Of The North, respectively, attended the Los Angeles premiere on Saturday.
‘We’re sorry. It just happens. It happens. We can’t help it. We’re trying our best, but there’s a lot of emotional things that happen and we’re just going with it,’ Erivo told ET.
‘Yeah, you need to understand. It’s been like three years, people!’ Ariana pleads. ‘Why does emotional availability scare you so?’
Next up, the lead actresses will take the trip to Mexico City, Mexico on Monday, November 11, for the next Wicked premiere.
From the sounds of things, the two leading ladies have formed quite the bond, which is understandable considering they have been connected at the hip since they were announced as the leads in in late 2021.

The filming of the 2024 film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked took about a year, with principal pH๏τography starting in December 2022 in England.
But, the shoot was paused in July 2023 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, only to pick back up after the winter holidays of that same year and eventually conclude in January 2024.
Remember, director Jon M. Chu decided to film the adaptation of Wicked into two separate movies, so that means the cast and crew will be doing all the promotional interviews all over again this time next year.
Wicked is the origin story of ‘a green-skinned woman who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West’, and serves as a prequel to The Wizard Of Oz, exploring the narrative before Dorothy’s arrival and delving into the former friendship between the characters Elphaba and Glinda.
Wicked: Part One hits theaters in the U.S. on November 22, and the sequel, Wicked Part Two, will follow the next year, premiering in cinemas on November 21, 2025
Along with Erivo and Grande, the film’s cast also includes Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James, Keala Settle, Peter Dinklage, Aaron Teoh, Grecia de la Paz, Colin Michael Carmichael, Adam James and Andy Nyman.
The movie is about an unlikely friendship that emerges between Elphaba and Glinda, two clashing witches in the magical land of Oz.
Elphaba is wrongfully cast as a wicked witch as she seeks to expose the fraudulent, corrupt Wizard who rules the land.
Wicked: Part One hits theaters in the U.S. on November 22, and then the sequel, Wicked Part Two, will follow the next year, premiering in cinemas on November 21, 2025.
