Saturday Night Live pays touching tribute to Quincy Jones after musical icon dies aged 91

Saturday Night Live paid a touching tribute to Quincy Jones after the musical icon died last week at the age of 91.

Quincy hosted the long-running sketch show once in 1990, and he decided to invite 10 musical guests on with him – a record for the program.

His performance included a tip of the hat to Nelson Mandela, who was hours away from his historic release from prison after 27 years.

Now, in the first Saturday Night Live episode since Quincy’s death, the program has offered its own homage to the legendary composer, songwriter and producer.

At the end of the episode, a card appeared onscreen with a black-and-white promotional pH๏τo Quincy took for his hosting appearance 34 years ago.

Quincy’s death was greeted with an outpouring of grief from celebrities, including his daughter Rashida, herself an acclaimed comic actress.

Rashida took to social media on Thursday to pay a heartfelt tribute to her father, music legend Quincy Jones, in the wake of his death at age 91.

The 48-year-old actress posted a throwback pH๏τo with her dad taken when she was a baby along with an emotional message to her ‘giant, ‘icon,’ and ‘genius’ father.

She wrote: ‘ My dad was nocturnal his whole adult life. He kept ‘jazz hours’ starting in high school and never looked back.

‘When I was little, I would wake up in the middle of the night to search for him. Undoubtedly, he would be somewhere in the house, composing (old school, with a pen and sheet music).’

The filmmaker recalled, ‘He would never send me back to bed. He would smile and bring me into his arms while he continued to work…there was no safer place in the world for me. He was a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. A genius.’

Continuing to memorialize her parent, she added, ‘His music (and ALL of his work) was a channel for his love. He WAS love.

‘He made everyone he ever met feel loved and seen. That’s his legacy.’

The star, who boasts nearly two million followers on the app, added, ‘I was fortunate enough to experience this love in close proximity. I’ll miss his hugs and kisses and unconditional devotion and advice. Daddy, it is an honor to be your daughter. Your love lives forever.’

Rashida is Quincy’s — who was a father-of-seven — sixth child.

Her mom, the late model and actress Peggy Lipton, was married to Jones from 1974 to 1990.

The music industry heavyweight died on Sunday night, his family announced in a statement on Monday.

Quincy’s last Instagram post was an affectionate birthday tribute to his daughter Martina on November 1.

He wrote: ‘Happy Birthday to my Tina Beena @martinafotos1!! So proud to be yo papa! Big hug, I love you eternally.’

Following his death, Martina similarly used Instagram to remember her dad.

She captioned a post, ‘How do I even start ? My dad to me was many things wrapped into one. My friend, my solid, my guidance and my inspiration of what love looks like.

‘The hole in my heart will definitely take time to heal. I will hold his humor, his words, his wisdom and love of life close to my heart and move forward with the strength he instilled in me and with every ounce of my being I can only hope to hold up my siblings and loved ones, and love them from the bottom of my heart.’

A number of celebrities also paid their respects to the record producer following the news of his pᴀssing.
