Luke Combs admits he got Tracy Chapman lyrics WRONG after Fast Car singer pointed out his error

Luke Combs admitted he made a mistake while recording his cover of Fast Car even after the original singer Tracy Chapman pointed it out.

The country star, 34, recalled making a mistake during one lyric and admitted that moment still haunts him today.

The seven-time Grammy nominee said he ‘wanted to crawl into a hole’ after she politely pointed out his mistake.

During a recent concert, he told the audience that after having a conversation with Chapman, he realized he incorrectly sang the lyric: ‘We gotta make a decision.’

Instead, he recorded: ‘Still gotta make a decision.’

He recalled: ‘That was the first time that I knew that I recorded the song incorrectly.

‘It was her telling me that,’ he told the crowd. ‘Because I remember, when she said that, I wanted to crawl into a hole.’

‘Luckily, she was awesome about it,’ he continued. ‘And I think about it every single time that I sing the song, and I will think about it every single time I sing this song for the rest of my whole life. But she was so cool about it.’

Then, Combs told the crowd he was going to sing Chapman’s original lyrics rather than his recorded version.

‘So the version you know is, “Still gotta make a decision,” he said before reiterating that those are ‘not the words.’

‘It’s just not the words,’ he explained. ‘I made that up in my head. So tonight, I’m going to sing, “We gotta make a decision.”

‘Because Tracy Chapman told me to, and d*** it, I’m gonna do it.’

Last year, Combs covered Fast Car, which Chapman released in 1988, and his version of the hit song quickly topped the country music charts.

Before their duet, Chapman said she was ‘happy’ to see people still enjoying the song after Combs made his cover 30 years after she initally released Fast Car.

‘I never expected to find myself on the country charts, but I’m honored to be there,’ she said.

‘I’m happy for Luke and his success and grateful that new fans have found and embraced Fast Car.’
