Sabrina Carpenter received six Grammy nominations Friday morning November 8, but one category may have surprised her loyal fanbase.
The 25-year-old received nods for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Pop Solo Album and Best New Artist.
The former Disney star, who released five albums prior to her highly acclaimed Short n’ Sweet disc, has been around for a decade, releasing her first single, Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying in 2014 under the Disney owned Hollywood Records.
According to Billboard, Carpenter’s years of experience do not disqualify her from being nominated as Best New Artist.
The rules of the Recording Academy require an artist to qualify for the category by releasing a minimum of five singles or tracks or one album, but there is no maximum, according to the publication.

The Grammys’ rules and guidelines booklet says nominations for Best New Artist hinge on when ‘the artist had attained a breakthrough or prominence’ as determined by a screening committee.
Carpenter has had quite a year since releasing Espresso in April.
The hit debuted at number seven on the Billboard charts, and peaked in third place on the H๏τ 100, while eventually reaching the top spot on the Global 200.
The single received two nominations; Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
Please, Please, Please followed in June and was nominated for Song of the Year, rising to number one on the Billboard charts after debuting in second place.
It was nominated for Song of the Year.
Until that time, Carpenter’s highest charted release was Skin, which reached number 48 in February 2021.
Because the singer’s long awaited breakthrough came after Sept. 15, 2023, the last day of the previous eligibility year, and she had not been nominated for a Grammy before, it was deemed okay for her to be included in the Best New Artist category.
A similar decision was made for Chappell Roan, who released her first single, Good Hurt, in 2017.
