9-YEAR-OLD BOY SPENDS NEARLY A MONTH IN THE HOSPITAL AFTER ALLEGED SEVERE AB#SE — FATHER AND GIRLFRIEND FACE NEGLECT CHARGES
A 9-year-old Indiana boy spent nearly a month in the hospital after authorities alleged he suffered severe ab#se and neglect at home.
According to court documents cited in reports published September 19, the boy was taken to an emergency room in Frankfort on August 26. His father, Jacob Neal, and Neal’s girlfriend, Elizabeth Crow, reportedly told medical staff that a shelf had fallen on the child.
Doctors allegedly became concerned that the explanation did not match the boy’s medical condition and reported signs of serious physical harm. The child was subsequently transferred to Riley Hospital for Children for further treatment.
SERIOUS MEDICAL CONCERNS
Court documents reportedly describe numerous injuries and significant medical problems, including malnutrition, anemia, gastrointestinal bleeding and head injuries. Doctors also identified spinal compression fractures and other conditions that required prolonged medical care.
The boy was described as severely underweight and reportedly required a blood transfusion during treatment. He ultimately remained hospitalized for nearly a month.
INVESTIGATORS EXAMINE CONDITIONS AT HOME
Authorities also investigated the circumstances surrounding the child’s life at home.
According to the allegations described in court documents, the boy was homeschooled and was expected to help care for three younger children. Investigators also reportedly obtained text messages between Neal and Crow that they say contained discussions about withholding food and physical punishment.
FATHER AND GIRLFRIEND FACE CHARGES
Neal and Crow are being held in the Clinton County Jail and face charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, according to the report.
The allegations remain part of an ongoing criminal case, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Their upcoming court proceedings are expected to provide additional information about the allegations and the child’s recovery.
The case has drawn renewed attention to the importance of recognizing and reporting signs of child ab#se and neglect, particularly when a child may be unable to seek help independently.
