The Anubis Shrine of Tutankhamun: Guardian of the Pharaoh’s Rest

The Anubis Shrine of Tutankhamun stands as a sentinel at the threshold of the young pharaoh’s final resting place, symbolizing protection and the afterlife’s mysteries. This artifact is a striking representation of the ancient Egyptian god Anubis, revered as the guardian of the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and the embalming process.

Guardian Deity

Anubis, the jackal-headed god, was central to ancient Egyptian beliefs regarding death and the afterlife. This particular statue of Anubis was mounted on the sliding cover of a casket designed in the form of a shrine. The positioning and the form are indicative of its dual purpose: serving as both a sacred protector and a potent symbol of the afterlife’s spiritual journey.

Processional Significance

The shrine itself was placed on a litter, highlighting its role in religious processions. In ancient Egyptian rituals, such litters were used to carry divine images through the streets, allowing the public to engage with their deities. The portability of this shrine underscores the importance of Anubis in funerary rites and ceremonies.

Strategic Placement

Discovered at the entrance to the Treasure Room of Tutankhamun’s tomb, the statue’s nose was turned towards the funerary chamber. This strategic placement was likely intended to leverage Anubis’ fearsome appearance to deter would-be tomb robbers and protect the pharaoh’s treasures. The ancient Egyptians believed that the sight of Anubis could invoke fear and reverence, safeguarding the sancтιтy of the tomb.
