A FORMER Nasa astronaut claims humanity has a catastrophic future and warns alien life is abundant in the galaxies surrounding us.
Leroy Chiao, who spent 230 days in space and completed six spacewalks, says it would be “arrogant” for us to believe we are the only species in space.

Writing for Space.com, the American pilot said it would be the “height of arrogance to believe that we are alone”.
“Moreover,” he added, “I believe that at some point, life on Earth will die out, either from natural causes, or from our own doing”.
He warned that technology would not be able to save humanity, as many have already predicted.
“I believe that life is always starting in some parts of the universe at the same time that it is dying out in others.
“We don’t know about each other, simply because the distances are so vast.”
Just slightly larger than Earth, it orbits the sun at distance able to sustain liquid water – the key to any form of life.
