Nestled within the forested hills of modern-day southern Turkey, near the ruins of ancient Patara in the Lycian region, lies one of the most astonishing yet little-known feats of ancient engineering: a solid-stone water pipeline dating back to around the 3rd century BCE. Unlike the soaring aqueducts of Rome, this system consists of carved cylindrical stone blocks—each precisely bored through the center and perfectly aligned to carry water across rugged terrain.
This ancient conduit once served Patara, a major Lycian port and later a Roman city, supplying it with fresh spring water from the inland mountains.
