Cleveland Browns set to trade quarterback before start of NFL season in shock move

The Cleveland Browns are set to trade one of their four quarterbacks before Week 1, according to reports.

The Browns will start their season against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 7 and had their first padded practice on Monday as they step up their preparations.

Their roster is currently stacked with talent as they approach the new season and sources now claim that one of their signal-callers will be traded in the coming weeks.

ESPN report that the Browns will likely shift one of Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders before their opening fixture.

Pickett is the least likely to be traded and, instead, is expected to earn a starting role with the Browns – despite recently suffering a hamstring injury.

The injury to Pickett is believed to have occurred during a red zone 11-on-11 drill late in Saturday’s practice, multiple reports have suggested.

Coach Kevin Stefanski is expected to address Pickett’s status before Monday’s practice. Pickett, 27, will be evaluated later in the week.

Flacco, 40, is also in contention to win the starting QB spot with the Browns, given his vast experience playing in the league.

Fellow quarterbacks Gabriel and Sanders are likely to be further down the order – with the latter being the subject of debate among Browns fans in recent weeks.

The quarterback suffered a humiliating slide in the NFL Draft in April, tumbling down into the fifth round amid general managers’ reported fears over his maturity.

The 23-year-old was eventually taken by the Browns with the 144th overall pick – but his future with the franchise remains uncertain.

After training with the third and fourth team this week, Sanders said: ‘I’m not even going to think about that or have that even in my thought process of why it is.

‘It doesn’t make me feel down or it doesn’t make me feel left out or anything because I know who I am as a person. I know who I am as an individual, and I know what I could bring to this team.’

Flacco and Pickett have mainly split first team reps between them while Dillon Gabriel, a third-round pick at quarterback in the draft, also had one 11-on-11 drill.
