New York quarterback Justin Fields carted off the field with leg injury at Jets training camp

New York Jets starting quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the field at training camp after suffering an apparent leg injury.

The team abruptly ended that portion of practice after the injury before moving on to special teams work, according to SNY’s Connor Hughes.

Hughes added in a separate post that Fields’ right cleat was removed and the quarterback was sitting upright.

Fields was brought in this season to replace Aaron Rodgers, whose own tenure with the Jets was derailed by a torn Achilles tendon on his first offensive drive with the team in 2023.

First-year head coach Aaron Glenn does have an experienced backup in 35-year-old NFL veteran Tyrod Taylor, who previously played in 14 games for the New York Giants in 2022 and 2023 before making a pair of appearances for the Jets last season.

New York also has 25-year-old former Kansas State and Nebraska star Adrian Martinez as well as Brady Cook, a rookie out of Missouri.

Fields’ new contract with the Jets is for two years and $40 million, including $30 million guaranteed.

The 26-year-old Fields was in Pittsburgh last season after playing his first three NFL seasons with the Chicago Bears, who took him with the 11th pick of the 2021 draft out of Ohio State.

In Pittsburgh, Wilson was expected to be the backup to Russell Wilson, who has since joined the Giants. But, when Wilson went down with a strained calf, Fields started six games, going 4-2 along the way.

Fields is being reunited with wide receiver Garrett Wilson, his former college teammate who just inked a four-year, $130 million extension.

New Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand is tasked with harnessing Fields’ arm strength and athleticism, while cutting down on his mental mistakes. Fields tossed a whopping 31 interceptions over his first 50 NFL games, but what may be more concerning is his habit of taking bad sacks. Since 2021, Fields has been taken down 151 times.
