Democratic politician Elissa Slotkin has gone viral after her ‘cringe’ attempt to make an NFL analogy backfired during a speech in the Senate.
The 49-year-old was elected to represent Michigan in the Senate in November 2024 and, on Wednesday, she gave her maiden speech on the floor.
Describing it as a ‘love letter to Michigan,’ Slotkin told her fellow senators that America will escape this ‘extremely tough time’ before citing the resurgence of the Detroit Lions.
‘For God’s sake people, the Detroit Lions are going to win the national championship and the Super Bowl and they were in the toilet for years!’ Slotkin said.
But fans quickly pointed out that the Super Bowl is the NFL’s season finale and there is no ‘national championship’ in professional football.
‘This is just another example of how embarrᴀssing it is when politicians try to pretend to be like everyday people,’ one wrote on social media.

‘They all do this and it’s extremely cringe.’ Another added, ‘Democrats always fail at the pretending to be normal thing,’ while a third accused Slotkin of ‘diminishing Michigan with her stupidity and lack of common sense.’
Slotkin may have meant to say that the Lions would win the NFC championship game, which acts as a de-facto semifinal before the Super Bowl.
The Lions went more than three decades without reaching the NFC championship game before the 2023 season, when they were beaten by the San Francisco 49ers. Detroit has never appeared in a Super Bowl.
‘Everyone here knows that we’re going through an extremely tough time in American politics,’ Slotkin said on Wednesday.
‘We know that when people look back on this period in history, they’re going to say that was the moment that Americans were turned against each other… but it is not the end and it’s not always going to be this way.’
As Michiganders, we understand how to survive bad times by rallying together… by charting a strategy from beginning to end on how we get through this moment.
‘And we will – for God’s sake people, the Detroit Lions are going to win the national championship and the Super Bowl and they were in the toilet for years!’
