Patrick Mahomes has made no secret of how much he loves the Dallas Mavericks but he may have taken it too far the night that Luka Doncic got traded.
The news of Doncic’s trade from the Mavs to the Los Angeles Lakers was one of the all-time groundbreaking moves in the history of the NBA and broke late on the night of February 1.
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Mahomes tweeted his shock shortly after it broke but he has now admitted that it wasn’t just social media where he made his feelings known.
‘I was actually at home when the Doncic trade happened, in bed, like I’m sure a lot of people were, and I remember rolling over and waking my wife up to tell her, like she cared as much as I did,’ Mahomes said of his wife, Brittany, in an interview with For The Win.
‘She basically put on a good face for me, but she rolled over, went back to sleep, and it kept me up for a couple hours. It took me a while (to process).’
Remarkably, Mahomes woke his sleeping wife up less than a month after she had given birth to their third child, a daughter called Golden Raye.

But the 29-year-old had forged a bond with Doncic and was sad to hear he was leaving.
‘It’s more than just a basketball player, man. I’ve known Luka since he was 18 years old in Dallas, and I was down there, like 22 years old,’ Mahomes added.
‘So, happy for him that he got to get to the Lakers, a great organization, and I’m sure the sky is the limit for them there.’
Mahomes is set to ramp up his focus for the new NFL season this week when the Chiefs report to camp for the 2025 campaign.
His team have a serious point to prove after getting blown away in the Super Bowl in New Orleans back in February. They lost 40-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles but the scoreline doesn’t reflect the gap in quality between the two teams on the night.
The Chiefs open the season in Brazil on September 5 against AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers.
They then have a Super Bowl rematch against the Eagles at Arrowhead Stadium on September 14.
