In the heart of the vast Anatolian steppe, not far from the modern city of Aksaray in central Turkey, stands a structure that seems frozen in both stone and time—the Great Caravansary of Sultan Han. Built in 1229 during the reign of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I of the Seljuk Empire, and later restored in 1278, this fortified inn is the largest and best-preserved example of its kind in Turkey. It embodies the intersection of architecture, religion, trade, and security during one of the most vibrant periods of medieval commerce: the era of the Silk Road.
At first glance, Sultan Han resembles an immense stone citadel. Its monumental portal—adorned with intricate muqarnas stonework—opens into a large courtyard surrounded by arched porticos and chambers. Travelers arriving here, dusty from long desert journeys, would find shelter not only for themselves but also for their animals and goods. Camels could rest in shaded stables, merchants could store spices, silks, or ceramics from distant lands, and guards could keep watch from towers rising above the thick defensive walls.
Measuring approximately 4,900 square meters, the caravansary is designed in two main sections: an open courtyard used in the summer and a covered hall used in the winter. The summer courtyard surrounds a small stone mescit, or prayer kiosk, set on a raised platform in the center. This sacred space, with its elegant dome and simple mihrab, allowed travelers to perform prayers before continuing their journey. In the covered section behind the courtyard, high barrel vaults provide cool shelter during Anatolia’s cold months. Here, the rhythmic repeтιтion of arches and columns creates a meditative atmosphere that echoes both the architectural refinement of the Seljuks and the spiritual mindset of those who pᴀssed through.
But Sultan Han was more than just a place to rest. It was part of a sophisticated network of “kervansarays” (as they were known in Turkish) that stretched from Central Asia to the Mediterranean. These were not private inns but state-sponsored insтιтutions, part of the Seljuk policy to promote safe trade across their vast territories. Travelers could stay for three days free of charge—an act of generosity and strategic importance. By protecting and supporting merchants, the Seljuks fostered economic growth and cross-cultural exchange, reinforcing their political power through prosperity and hospitality alike.
Seen from above today, the caravansary appears like a colossal stone ship run aground, its geometry still sharp against the muted tones of the Anatolian plain. Though silent now, every carved stone and weathered wall holds traces of countless lives and stories: Persian traders with carpets and lapis lazuli, Venetian emissaries bearing letters of diplomacy, Sufi mystics crossing the empire on spiritual quests. Each traveler brought with them a fragment of their world—and left with a piece of Anatolia.
Though centuries have pᴀssed and the Silk Road has faded into memory, Sultan Han endures. It is no longer a shelter for weary merchants, but a monument to what once was—a place where East met West, where commerce and culture moved hand in hand. It raises a question that resonates even today:
