NFL star reveals the 'real' reason Mike Williams suddenly retired from football at age 30

An NFL star has shed light on the potential reasons why Los Angeles Chargers star Mike Williams suddenly retired from football at age 30.

On Thursday afternoon, the wide receiver called time on his career in a shock move that came just days after the Chargers gave a worrying update on his health.

Williams had been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list with an undisclosed injury but, days later, he made the decision to retire.

Now, Jacksonville Jaguars star Jourdan Lewis has weighed in on the matter and suggested that head coach Jim Harbaugh could have played a role in the shock decision.

Lewis took to X to share his thoughts Williams’ retirement. In his first post, he wrote: ‘Mike Williams had one day of Harbaugh’s camp and said this it’.

One fan responded to that post with a series of laughing emojis. Lewis replied saying: ‘Jim was go kill em’.

Another replied with: ‘to be fair my boy been glᴀss since he entered the league’.  Lewis responded: ‘You ever seen one of those rage rooms? Thats what Harbaugh does to glᴀss.’

One fan then said: ‘JD can we get an old Harbaugh camp story’. Lewis obliged by claiming: ‘The only time we saw the sun was at practice’.

Lewis – who was coached by Harbaugh at Michigan – then later shared an example of a fall camp schedule under the Chargers star.

It showed a rigorous routine that was planned from their wake-up at 6:30am to their curfew at 11pm. It included a number of treatment appointments, meetings and team practice.

In a caption to the post, he wrote: ‘We did this everyday, 6 days a week, for a month. Mike I ain’t talking bad about you, I just know’.

Shortly after that, in reference to his old Michigan teammates, he wrote: ‘Mf was trying to get concussions to get three days off. Lmaooooo, we were purified through fire!’

Meanwhile, on Wednesday night, Williams’ agent, Tory Dandy, informed the team on about his decision to hang up his cleats.

Shortly after reports emerged, the Chargers shared a picture of Williams onto their social media accounts. The caption read: ‘Whole lotta love’.

Later in the day, Chargers QB Justin Herbert said: ‘There’s not too many guys like Mike… We’re definitely going to miss him.’

Williams, 30, returned to the Chargers, back in March, on a one-year, $3 million deal after spending last year with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.

He was the No. 7 pick of the 2017 NFL Draft and spent seven years with the Chargers before suffering an ACL tear back in 2023. He was released later that season.

Williams then signed a one-year deal worth up to $15 million before sending him to the Steelers midseason. He played out that deal before returning to the Chargers.

There would have been hopes that, after re-signing with the Chargers, Williams could rediscover his pre-ACL form – but it seems as though they won’t find out now.

During his time with both the Jets and the Steelers, Williams recorded 21 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown.

Overall in his career, Williams made 106 appearances and recorded 330 catches for 5,104 yards and 32 touchdowns.
