Los Angeles Chargers star Mike Williams has retired from the NFL, according to his agent.
The bombshell announcement comes just days after the Chargers gave a worrying update on Williams’ health in the lead up to their training camp.
Williams had been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list with an undisclosed injury but now it appears that he’s decided to walk away from the sport.
ESPN claim that Williams’ agent, Tory Dandy, informed the team on Wednesday night about his decision to hang up his cleats.
Williams, 30, returned to the Chargers, back in March, on a one-year, $3 million deal after spending last year with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.
He was the No. 7 pick of the 2017 NFL Draft and spent seven years with the Chargers before suffering an ACL tear back in 2023. He was released later that season.

Williams then signed a one-year deal worth up to $15 million before sending him to the Steelers midseason. He played out that deal before returning to the Chargers.
There would have been hopes that, after re-signing with the Chargers, Williams could rediscover his pre-ACL form – but it seems as though they won’t find out now.
During his time with both the Jets and the Steelers, Williams recorded 21 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown.
Overall in his career, Williams made 106 appearances and recorded 330 catches for 5,104 yards and 32 touchdowns.

The bombshell announcement means that the Chargers will be reliant upon the likes of Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and Tre Harris to step up and fill his spot.
Meanwhile, fellow Chargers Najee Harris recently suffered a ‘superficial eye injury’ after a freak accident at a 4th of July event, according to his agent.
Earlier in the week, reports claimed that the Los Angeles Chargers star was the victim of the bizarre mishap and rumors over his condition began to circulate.
Now, Harris’ agent has come forward and put the rumors to bed as he confirmed the running back did in fact suffer the injury and provided an update on his availability.
