Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo drops major hint on his NBA future

Giannis Antetokounmpo is being urged to play in New York or Los Angeles, but the Milwaukee Bucks superstar thinks he’s ‘probably’ staying on the shores of Lake Michigan.

Speaking with a 20-year-old streamer known as ‘IShowSpeed,’ the 30-year-old former NBA champion was told that taxes in Los Angeles and New York were both extraordinarily high.

Upon hearing LA and New York, Antetokounmpo told the streamer that ‘a lot of people’ are trying to convince him to play in those two cities. The 6-foot-11 power forward can’t become a free agent until the summer of 2027, but he has been named in trade rumors over the last few months.

And given the Greek Freak’s uncertain future, IShowSpeed asked if he’ll be staying in Milwaukee.

‘Probably,’ Antetokounmpo said in his native Greece. ‘Probably. We’ll see. We’ll see. Probably. I love Milwaukee.’

The Bucks recently waived injured All-Star Damian Lillard to add former Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner. Just how those moves will impact Antetokounmpo’s desire to remain in Milwaukee is unclear, but there would be no shortage of suitors of the Bucks were to move him.

Beyond New York’s Knicks and Brooklyn Nets or Los Angeles’ Lakers and Clippers, the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors are also believed to be interested in Antetokounmpo.

He currently has at least two years on his contract but would be eligible next season to sign a four-year, $293 million extension with the Bucks or whichever team can manage to trade for the former league MVP.

While Antetokounmpo did say he would ‘probably’ return to Milwaukee, he didn’t shut the door entirely, which is more than enough hope for other NBA teams.

‘The thing about it is, is he didn’t give a definitive answer,’ NBA insider Brian Windhorst told his ESPN cohosts. ‘And I’m certainly not going to analyze something he said seaside in Greece but what I will say is the “we’ll see,” that is essentially what there’s about five or six NBA teams banking on, the “we’ll see.”

‘And I know it sounds trivial but for years Giannis was completely locked in,’ Windhorst continued. ‘Him saying “we’ll see” backs up what [ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania] has been saying this entire summer, which is that he might be more open-minded than he was in the past. And I would say the same thing, “Probably Milwaukee, but we’ll see.”

‘And now I can quote Giannis on that, thank you very much.’

The Bucks are currently over the NBA salary cap by $15 million but they’re still $20 million under the luxury tax threshold.
