Nick Chubb expected to sign with Texans in free agency after Browns exit

Nick Chubb is likely headed to a new destination.

The free agent running back appears poised to continue his NFL career in Houston, according to NFL Network, who said he’s expected to join the Texans on Monday pending a successful physical.

Chubb, 29, was drafted in the second round by the Browns in 2018.

He quickly became one of the league’s best running backs, posting four consecutive 1,000‑yard rushing seasons from 2019-22 with a 5.2 yard-per-carry average.

For his efforts, Chubb was named to the Pro Bowl each of those four seasons and was a second-team All-Pro in 2022.

However, Chubb has suited up for just 10 games over the past two seasons, first tearing his MCL and ACL in Week 2 of 2023 and later breaking his foot in December 2024.

Cleveland made it pretty clear they were moving on from Chubb after selecting running backs Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson in the 2025 NFL Draft in the second and fourth rounds respectively to go with returnee Jerome Ford.

Houston’s running back room, currently headlined by Joe Mixon, Dameon Pierce, Woody Marks and Dare Ogunbowale, would get a bit more crowded if the former Pro Bowler lands there.

Mixon finished his first year with Houston, recording 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns last season on the ground.

Mixon also caught 36 pᴀsses for 309 yards and scored one touchdown through the air.

Marks and Ogunbowale are expected to deepen the rotation, and Pierce, once a fantasy darling, was firmly relegated to a secondary role with Mixon’s signing last season.

The addition of Chubb could offer Houston a formidable 1‑2 punch in the backfield.
