Jurᴀssic World Rebirth (2025), directed by Gareth Edwards, marks a bold new chapter in the iconic Jurᴀssic Park franchise. This thrilling sci-fi adventure reinvigorates the series with a fresh narrative, high-stakes action, and thought-provoking themes. Led by Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali, the film combines breathtaking visuals, cutting-edge effects, and a compelling storyline that explores the ethical dilemmas of bioengineering and humanity’s relationship with nature. While some subplots feel underdeveloped, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth delivers a cinematic spectacle that will captivate both longtime fans and newcomers. In this comprehensive 2,000-word review, we dive into the plot, performances, themes, visuals, and more to explore why this film is a must-watch in 2025.

Plot Summary: A High-Stakes Mission in a Prehistoric World

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth introduces Zora (Scarlett Johansson), a brilliant scientist tasked with a covert mission to extract dinosaur DNA from a remote island teeming with prehistoric creatures. The DNA is critical for developing medical breakthroughs that could save countless lives, but the mission is fraught with danger and ethical questions. Zora leads a diverse team, including a seasoned operative played by Mahershala Ali, as they navigate untamed jungles, face ᴅᴇᴀᴅly dinosaurs, and confront internal betrayals that threaten their survival.

The narrative unfolds as a tense, action-packed journey, blending survival horror with sci-fi intrigue. The team’s mission raises profound questions about the morality of exploiting nature for human gain, echoing real-world debates about bioethics and genetic engineering. While the central plot is gripping, some secondary storylines, such as interpersonal conflicts among team members, feel rushed and could have benefited from deeper exploration. Nevertheless, the film’s pacing keeps viewers on edge, with each dinosaur encounter escalating the stakes.

The story’s focus on bioethics sets Jurᴀssic World Rebirth apart from its predecessors. Unlike earlier films that centered on theme parks gone wrong, this installment explores the consequences of using dinosaur DNA for scientific advancement. The narrative draws parallels to contemporary issues, such as CRISPR gene editing and the ethical boundaries of medical research, making it both timely and thought-provoking.

Stellar Performances: Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali Shine

The cast of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is one of its strongest ᴀssets, with Scarlett Johansson delivering a commanding performance as Zora. Her portrayal of a determined scientist grappling with moral dilemmas is both fierce and relatable. Johansson brings intensity to the action sequences and depth to quieter moments, making Zora a compelling protagonist who anchors the film.

Mahershala Ali complements Johansson with a nuanced performance as a team member with his own complex motivations. Ali’s gravitas and subtlety add emotional weight to the story, particularly in scenes that explore themes of loyalty and sacrifice. The chemistry between Johansson and Ali elevates the film, creating a dynamic interplay that keeps viewers invested in the team’s fate.

The supporting cast, though less prominent, delivers solid performances. Each actor brings authenticity to their role, whether portraying scientists, mercenaries, or corporate operatives. However, some secondary characters lack sufficient development, which slightly undermines the emotional impact of certain plot twists.

Themes and Messages: Nature, Ethics, and Human Ambition

At its core, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is a cautionary tale about humanity’s hubris and the consequences of tampering with nature. The film explores the ethical implications of using dinosaur DNA for medical purposes, raising questions about where to draw the line in scientific innovation. These themes resonate with real-world debates about genetic engineering, cloning, and the commercialization of scientific discoveries.

The movie also emphasizes the power and unpredictability of nature. The dinosaurs, portrayed as majestic yet terrifying creatures, serve as a reminder that some forces are beyond human control. This message is woven into the narrative through Zora’s evolving perspective, as she grapples with the consequences of her mission.

While the film’s themes are thought-provoking, they occasionally take a backseat to the action. A more balanced exploration of these ideas could have elevated Jurᴀssic World Rebirth to a deeper philosophical level. Nevertheless, the movie succeeds in sparking reflection on humanity’s relationship with the natural world.

Visuals and Cinematography: A Stunning Prehistoric Spectacle

Gareth Edwards, known for his work on Rogue One and Godzilla, brings his signature visual flair to Jurᴀssic World Rebirth. The cinematography is breathtaking, capturing the lush, untamed jungles and towering dinosaurs with awe-inspiring detail. Wide-angle sH๏τs of the island create a sense of scale, while close-ups of the dinosaurs emphasize their raw power and realism.

The film’s visual effects are a standout, seamlessly blending cutting-edge CGI with practical effects. The dinosaurs, from the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex to lesser-known species, feel authentic and alive. Each creature is meticulously designed, with textures, movements, and behaviors that reflect their prehistoric origins. The attention to detail in the effects work makes every encounter visceral and immersive.

The action sequences are expertly choreographed, balancing suspense with spectacle. Whether it’s a high-speed chase through the jungle or a tense standoff with a pack of velociraptors, the film keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. The sound design, with roaring dinosaurs and rustling foliage, enhances the immersive experience, making the island feel like a living, breathing ecosystem.

Direction and Pacing: Gareth Edwards’ Vision

Gareth Edwards’ direction is a key factor in the film’s success. His ability to blend large-scale action with intimate character moments creates a dynamic viewing experience. Edwards’ experience with sci-fi and monster movies shines through in his handling of the dinosaurs, which are portrayed as both majestic and terrifying.

The film’s pacing is generally strong, with a steady buildup of tension punctuated by explosive action scenes. However, some subplots, particularly those involving secondary characters, feel rushed and could have been fleshed out further. Despite these minor flaws, Edwards’ vision for Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is cohesive and ambitious, delivering a fresh take on the franchise while honoring its roots.

Music and Soundtrack: Enhancing the Emotional Impact

The soundtrack, composed by a leading industry talent (specific composer details TBD for 2025 release), complements the film’s tone perfectly. The score blends orchestral grandeur with modern electronic elements, creating a sense of adventure and danger. Key moments, such as dinosaur chases and emotional revelations, are heightened by the music, which underscores the film’s emotional and thematic depth.

The sound design is equally impressive, with every roar, stomp, and rustle contributing to the immersive atmosphere. The attention to audio detail ensures that viewers feel fully transported to the prehistoric world of Jurᴀssic World Rebirth.

Comparisons to Previous Jurᴀssic Films

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth stands out in the Jurᴀssic Park franchise for its focus on bioethics and scientific ambition, rather than theme park chaos. While Jurᴀssic Park (1993) and Jurᴀssic World (2015) explored the dangers of commercializing dinosaurs, Rebirth takes a more introspective approach, examining the moral complexities of genetic research.

The film also feels more grounded than some of its predecessors, thanks to its emphasis on character-driven drama and real-world parallels. However, fans of the franchise’s signature dinosaur action will not be disappointed, as Rebirth delivers plenty of thrilling encounters that pay homage to the series’ legacy.

Who Should Watch Jurᴀssic World Rebirth?

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is a must-watch for fans of the Jurᴀssic Park franchise, as well as anyone who enjoys sci-fi adventures with strong performances and stunning visuals. The film’s blend of action, suspense, and ethical dilemmas makes it accessible to a wide audience, from casual moviegoers to those interested in thought-provoking themes.

Parents should note that the film contains intense action sequences and some violence, making it more suitable for older children and teens. Check the official MPAA rating (likely PG-13) before bringing younger viewers.

A Farmer’s Misplaced Hammer Led to the Largest Roman Treasure in Britain

November 16, 1992 was the day which changed Suffolk-resident Eric Lawes’ life in a huge way. What he thought would have been an innocent search for a hammer he had misplaced on his farm in Hoxne Village, Suffolk, England ended up bringing him much more than he had bargained for — namely, uncovering the hiding spot of a long-hidden treasure. Based on the Guardian’s coverage of the story, Eric Lawes had been previously gifted a metal detector upon his retirement as a parting token. He decided to put his retirement gift to good use in order to locate the hammer which he had had some trouble finding. According to a 2018 Smithsonian Magazine article, when the device started recording that there was a strong signal coming from the earth, he knew that he was about to discover something big. As he started digging, it soon became clear to him that he had unearthed a treasure trove.

The Guardian reports that, when Lawes saw that his preliminary digging had yielded a few gold coins and silver spoons, he immediately contacted both the local archaeological society and the police department. Archaeologists came to the property the following day and had the area of earth holding the treasure carefully sectioned-off and removed. Their hope was that at a later stage, in their laboratory, they could examined the items in order to identify both their age and how they were stored.

When all was said and done, close to 60 pounds of items made from silver and gold were found on the site. These included more than 15,000 Roman coins, 200 gold objects, and several silver spoons. For archaeologists, this find — which later became labeled as the Hoxne Hoard — was an incredible discovery. AP News reported that archaeologist Judith Plouviez was over-the-moon about the discovery, saying that it was “an incredibly exciting and amazing find.” What’s more, another archaeologist, Rachel Wilkinson, told Smithsonian Magazine that this discovery was “the largest and latest ever found in Britain.”

Ordinarily, archaeologists would use radiocarbon dating as a means of identifying the age of ancient relics. However, they couldn’t locate any suitable material from the haul. Consequently, they determined the age by examining writing on the coins, as well as the ruler carved into them, estimating that the treasure was probably buried in either 408 or 409 AD.

Roman-era archaeologist Peter Guest told Smithsonian Magazine that “if you look at them a little more carefully, then they should be dated to the period after the separation of Britain from the Roman Empire.” He offers as part of his evidence the fact that almost all of the coins found in the Hoxne Hoard were clipped – in other words, small chunks of their edges had been taken off. These clippings would have been used to create coins which were similar to the Roman coins of that era.

Guest has a logical reason for this, arguing that “The Roman Empire wasn’t supplying Britain with new gold and silver coins, and in light of that, the population tried to get over this sudden cutoff in the supply of their precious metals by making the existing supplies go further.”

Archaeologists also believe that the treasure belonged to a Romano-British family. During that time, considering that there was so much societal discord and upheaval, it was common for Romans who had settled in Britain to bury their most prized possessions.

That said, one archaeologist is of the belief that the hoard had a lot of sentimental value for the Romano-British family to whom it is believed to have belonged. In her book The Hoxne Late Roman Treasure: Gold Jewellery and Silver Plate, Catherine Johns claims that the manner in which the treasure was kept supported this claim. Some of the items which were recovered had been packaged in small, wooden boxes which were lined with leather. What’s more, pieces of wood, locks, and nails, among other things, surrounded the gold and silver pieces. This leads Catherine to assert that the package was carefully buried and not simply chucked away in a rush.

Interestingly enough, the items unearthed might shed some light on the identity of the family who owned them. They cite a gold bracelet bearing the inscription “UTERE FELIX DOMINA IULIANE,” which roughly translates to “use this happily Lady Juliane”. A second name “Aurelius Ursicinus” has also been discovered. This has consequently led some to believe that Juliane and Aurelius were the couple and the original owners of the treasure. That said, that has yet to be confirmed.

All in all, the discovery was a real treasure for archaeologists, and by extension, for Lawes. According to Smithsonian Magazine, in recognition of his discovery and willingness to contact authorities, the British government rewarded him with over £1.7 million, an amount which he shared with the farmer whose land was dug out in order to get the treasure. Funnily enough, apart from the treasure, Lawes also found his lost hammer — which now resides in the British Museum.
