Return to Bebbanburg, set to premiere on Netflix in late 2025, marks the triumphant return of Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the fierce warrior torn between his Saxon roots and Danish upbringing. This highly anticipated spin-off from The Last Kingdom promises to deliver a gripping blend of historical drama, visceral action, and emotional depth. With its stunning cinematography, haunting score, and Dreymon’s commanding performance, Return to Bebbanburg is poised to captivate fans of the original series and newcomers alike. This 1000-word review explores the series’ narrative, performances, production quality, and why it’s a must-watch for history and drama enthusiasts, all while adhering to SEO best practices.

A Bold New Chapter in Uhtred’s Saga

Return to Bebbanburg picks up after the events of The Last Kingdom and its 2023 feature-length finale, Seven Kings Must Die. The series centers on Uhtred, now the Lord of Northumbria, as he navigates the fragile unity of England under King Aethelstan’s reign. While Seven Kings Must Die concluded with Uhtred reclaiming his ancestral home, this spin-off delves into unfinished business in Bebbanburg, exploring the political and personal challenges that threaten his legacy. The narrative promises a darker, more introspective tone, focusing on diplomacy and leadership alongside the series’ signature sword-clashing battles.

The plot is set against the brutal backdrop of a fractured England, where Saxon and Dane tensions simmer. Uhtred’s quest to secure Bebbanburg is complicated by new enemies, shifting alliances, and the weight of his own past. Early reports suggest the series will dive deeper into Uhtred’s internal conflict—his loyalty to his Saxon birthright versus the pagan traditions that shaped him—making for a compelling character-driven story. The stakes feel personal yet monumental, as Uhtred’s actions could shape the destiny of a nation still grappling with unification. Fans of Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories, the source material for The Last Kingdom, will appreciate the series’ commitment to historical roots while introducing fresh narratives.

Alexander Dreymon’s Stellar Performance

Alexander Dreymon’s portrayal of Uhtred remains the heart and soul of Return to Bebbanburg. His nuanced performance captures Uhtred’s stoic strength, emotional complexity, and relentless drive for justice. Dreymon, who also serves as an executive producer, brings authenticity to the role, drawing on his deep connection to the character after nearly a decade. His ability to convey Uhtred’s inner turmoil—caught between two cultures—adds depth to the action-heavy narrative. Whether wielding a sword in battle or navigating tense political negotiations, Dreymon commands the screen with a presence that’s both charismatic and grounded.

Dreymon’s involvement as a producer ensures the series stays true to its roots, maintaining the gritty realism and historical accuracy that made The Last Kingdom a fan favorite. In a recent interview, he expressed his pᴀssion for continuing Uhtred’s journey, stating, “There’s still so much to tell—stories of sacrifice, love, and the real cost of power.” His dedication shines through, making Uhtred not just a warrior but a statesman whose legacy resonates with audiences. The supporting cast, though not fully revealed, is expected to include returning characters like Finan (Mark Rowley) and Sihtric (Arnas Fedaravičius), whose camaraderie with Uhtred adds warmth to the series’ darker tone.

Cinematic Brilliance and Production Quality

Return to Bebbanburg elevates the visual storytelling of its predecessor with a higher budget and state-of-the-art cinematography. Filmed in Hungary and the UK, the series captures the raw beauty of medieval Britain, from windswept coastal fortresses to blood-soaked battlefields. The production team’s attention to detail—authentic costumes, intricate set designs, and practical battle sequences—immerses viewers in the Saxon-Dane world. The haunting score, a hallmark of The Last Kingdom, returns to amplify the emotional and epic scope of the series, with sweeping melodies that evoke both triumph and tragedy.

The action sequences are a standout, blending visceral sword fights with strategic warfare. Unlike the conquest-heavy earlier seasons, Return to Bebbanburg balances intense battles with moments of diplomacy, reflecting Uhtred’s evolution from warrior to leader. The cinematography enhances these scenes, with dynamic camera work that captures the chaos of combat and the stark beauty of Northumbria’s landscapes. Fans can expect the same commitment to practical effects that made The Last Kingdom’s battles feel authentic, paired with modern visual techniques for a cinematic experience.

Themes of Legacy and Idenтιтy

At its core, Return to Bebbanburg is a story about legacy, loyalty, and idenтιтy. Uhtred’s journey reflects the broader struggle of a nation forging its idenтιтy amidst cultural and political divides. The series explores how Uhtred’s decisions—rooted in his dual Saxon-Dane heritage—shape not only his fate but also England’s future. Themes of sacrifice and the cost of power add emotional weight, making the series more than just an action spectacle. The narrative’s focus on diplomacy alongside warfare offers a fresh perspective, distinguishing it from the original series’ battle-driven arcs.

The emotional depth is heightened by Uhtred’s personal struggles. As a father and leader, he grapples with the burdens of protecting Bebbanburg while honoring his past. These quieter moments, interwoven with the action, create a well-rounded story that resonates with viewers. The series also hints at exploring the next generation, with characters like Uhtred’s youngest son, Osbert, potentially playing a larger role, adding a layer of generational legacy to the saga.

Potential Challenges

While Return to Bebbanburg promises to be a thrilling continuation, it faces the challenge of living up to The Last Kingdom’s legacy. Some fans may find the shift toward diplomacy less engaging than the relentless battles of earlier seasons. Additionally, the absence of certain beloved characters, like Stiorra, could disappoint viewers expecting a full reunion of the original cast. The series will need to balance fan expectations with its new direction to maintain the momentum of its predecessor.

Why Return to Bebbanburg Is a Must-Watch

Return to Bebbanburg is a triumphant return to the world of The Last Kingdom, offering a fresh yet faithful continuation of Uhtred’s story. Alexander Dreymon’s magnetic performance, paired with stunning visuals and a gripping narrative, makes this series a standout for 2025. Its blend of heart-pounding action, historical depth, and emotional resonance ensures broad appeal for fans of historical dramas and epic adventures. Set to premiere in late 2025, this Netflix series is a must-see for anyone craving a tale of honor, revenge, and legacy.

A Farmer’s Misplaced Hammer Led to the Largest Roman Treasure in Britain

November 16, 1992 was the day which changed Suffolk-resident Eric Lawes’ life in a huge way. What he thought would have been an innocent search for a hammer he had misplaced on his farm in Hoxne Village, Suffolk, England ended up bringing him much more than he had bargained for — namely, uncovering the hiding spot of a long-hidden treasure. Based on the Guardian’s coverage of the story, Eric Lawes had been previously gifted a metal detector upon his retirement as a parting token. He decided to put his retirement gift to good use in order to locate the hammer which he had had some trouble finding. According to a 2018 Smithsonian Magazine article, when the device started recording that there was a strong signal coming from the earth, he knew that he was about to discover something big. As he started digging, it soon became clear to him that he had unearthed a treasure trove.

The Guardian reports that, when Lawes saw that his preliminary digging had yielded a few gold coins and silver spoons, he immediately contacted both the local archaeological society and the police department. Archaeologists came to the property the following day and had the area of earth holding the treasure carefully sectioned-off and removed. Their hope was that at a later stage, in their laboratory, they could examined the items in order to identify both their age and how they were stored.

When all was said and done, close to 60 pounds of items made from silver and gold were found on the site. These included more than 15,000 Roman coins, 200 gold objects, and several silver spoons. For archaeologists, this find — which later became labeled as the Hoxne Hoard — was an incredible discovery. AP News reported that archaeologist Judith Plouviez was over-the-moon about the discovery, saying that it was “an incredibly exciting and amazing find.” What’s more, another archaeologist, Rachel Wilkinson, told Smithsonian Magazine that this discovery was “the largest and latest ever found in Britain.”

Ordinarily, archaeologists would use radiocarbon dating as a means of identifying the age of ancient relics. However, they couldn’t locate any suitable material from the haul. Consequently, they determined the age by examining writing on the coins, as well as the ruler carved into them, estimating that the treasure was probably buried in either 408 or 409 AD.

Roman-era archaeologist Peter Guest told Smithsonian Magazine that “if you look at them a little more carefully, then they should be dated to the period after the separation of Britain from the Roman Empire.” He offers as part of his evidence the fact that almost all of the coins found in the Hoxne Hoard were clipped – in other words, small chunks of their edges had been taken off. These clippings would have been used to create coins which were similar to the Roman coins of that era.

Guest has a logical reason for this, arguing that “The Roman Empire wasn’t supplying Britain with new gold and silver coins, and in light of that, the population tried to get over this sudden cutoff in the supply of their precious metals by making the existing supplies go further.”

Archaeologists also believe that the treasure belonged to a Romano-British family. During that time, considering that there was so much societal discord and upheaval, it was common for Romans who had settled in Britain to bury their most prized possessions.

That said, one archaeologist is of the belief that the hoard had a lot of sentimental value for the Romano-British family to whom it is believed to have belonged. In her book The Hoxne Late Roman Treasure: Gold Jewellery and Silver Plate, Catherine Johns claims that the manner in which the treasure was kept supported this claim. Some of the items which were recovered had been packaged in small, wooden boxes which were lined with leather. What’s more, pieces of wood, locks, and nails, among other things, surrounded the gold and silver pieces. This leads Catherine to assert that the package was carefully buried and not simply chucked away in a rush.

Interestingly enough, the items unearthed might shed some light on the identity of the family who owned them. They cite a gold bracelet bearing the inscription “UTERE FELIX DOMINA IULIANE,” which roughly translates to “use this happily Lady Juliane”. A second name “Aurelius Ursicinus” has also been discovered. This has consequently led some to believe that Juliane and Aurelius were the couple and the original owners of the treasure. That said, that has yet to be confirmed.

All in all, the discovery was a real treasure for archaeologists, and by extension, for Lawes. According to Smithsonian Magazine, in recognition of his discovery and willingness to contact authorities, the British government rewarded him with over £1.7 million, an amount which he shared with the farmer whose land was dug out in order to get the treasure. Funnily enough, apart from the treasure, Lawes also found his lost hammer — which now resides in the British Museum.
