Ip Man 5 (2025) Movie Review: Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan Unite in a Martial Arts Masterpiece

Ip Man 5 (2025), directed by Wilson Yip, marks the triumphant return of Donnie Yen as Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man in the fifth installment of the acclaimed Hong Kong martial arts series. Announced at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 by Mandarin Motion Pictures, this film introduces Jackie Chan as a significant new character, bringing an electrifying dynamic to the franchise. Set in Hong Kong during the turbulent 1960s, Ip Man 5 promises to blend the series’ signature breathtaking fight choreography with a poignant narrative, exploring themes of tradition, resilience, and legacy. With a reported budget exceeding $30 million, this film aims to conclude Ip Man’s cinematic journey with a spectacle that honors its roots while pushing the boundaries of martial arts cinema. This 1000-word review delves into the film’s narrative, performances, production quality, and why it’s a must-see for fans, addressing the speculative inclusion of Dwayne Johnson and focusing on verified details.

A Narrative of Legacy and Resistance

Ip Man 5 (2025) faces the challenge of continuing the story after Ip Man’s death from throat cancer in 1972, as depicted in Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019). While official plot details remain limited, the film is likely set in the 1960s, possibly as a prequel or flashback exploring an untold chapter of Ip Man’s life in Hong Kong. Drawing from Donnie Yen’s Instagram teaser poster featuring a Wing Chun wooden dummy surrounded by defeated foes, the narrative may focus on Ip Man’s efforts to protect his martial arts school and the principles of Wing Chun against external threats, such as rival schools or colonial influences during Hong Kong’s turbulent colonial era.

Speculative details suggest a plot where Ip Man unites his students to combat a foreign criminal organization aiming to suppress traditional Chinese martial arts, but this remains unconfirmed by Mandarin Motion Pictures. A more likely scenario, based on the franchise’s history, involves Ip Man navigating Hong Kong’s 1960s social unrest, potentially tied to the growing influence of triads or tensions between Eastern and Western martial arts communities. The film may incorporate a flashback structure, with Ip Man’s son, Ip Chun, or a student like Wong Shun Leung reflecting on untold stories, allowing Yen to deliver action-heavy sequences while addressing the master’s legacy. The narrative is expected to maintain the series’ thematic progression: survival (Ip Man), adaptation (Ip Man 2), life (Ip Man 3), and legacy (Ip Man 4), with Ip Man 5 likely emphasizing the enduring impact of Wing Chun and Ip Man’s teachings, possibly through his student Bruce Lee.

Stellar Performances by Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan

Donnie Yen reprises his iconic role as Ip Man, delivering what is billed as his final performance as the Wing Chun grandmaster. Known for his roles in John Wick: Chapter 4 and Rogue One, Yen brings unmatched precision and charisma to Ip Man, blending serene dignity with explosive martial arts prowess. His portrayal has defined the franchise, transforming Ip Man into a cinematic icon of resilience and honor. In Ip Man 5, Yen is expected to showcase his signature Wing Chun techniques—rapid strikes, close-quarters combat, and wooden dummy training—while exploring new emotional depths as Ip Man confronts his mortality and legacy.

Jackie Chan joins the cast in a significant role, rumored to be Master Liu, a Shaolin monk with exceptional combat skills and a complex past. Chan, a legend known for Rush Hour and Police Story, brings his acrobatic, stunt-driven style to the film, contrasting Yen’s precise Wing Chun with dynamic, environment-based choreography. Their anticipated on-screen confrontation promises a historic clash of martial arts тιтans, blending mutual respect with compeтιтive intensity. Chan’s role may involve a rival master or ally, potentially inspired by historical martial arts figures, adding depth to the narrative through their camaraderie or rivalry.

The claim of Dwayne Johnson’s involvement appears to be speculative, as no official sources from Mandarin Motion Pictures or major outlets like IMDb, Variety, or Collider confirm his participation. Instead, returning cast members may include Danny Kwok-Kwan Chan as Bruce Lee, whose brief appearances in Ip Man 3 and Ip Man 4 have been fan favorites, potentially with a larger role given the 1960s setting. Other possible returnees include Lynn Hung as Cheung Wing-sing or Kent Cheng as Fat Bo, alongside new martial arts stars like Wu Yue or Scott Adkins, who have previously collaborated with Yen.

Breathtaking Action and Direction

Directed by Wilson Yip, who helmed all four main Ip Man films, Ip Man 5 promises to uphold the series’ reputation for stunning fight choreography. Yip’s collaboration with Yen, dating back to SPL: Sha Po Lang (2005), has produced some of Hong Kong cinema’s most iconic action sequences, and this film is expected to follow suit. The choreography, likely overseen by a veteran like Sammo Hung or Yen himself, will blend Wing Chun’s rapid, precise strikes with Chan’s acrobatic, prop-heavy style, creating a visual spectacle. Expect sequences in Hong Kong’s urban rooftops or the gritty Kowloon Walled City, capitalizing on the success of Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (2024).

The film’s production quality is top-tier, with a budget over $30 million ensuring high-caliber visuals. Cinematography will capture Hong Kong’s 1960s aesthetic—neon-lit streets, colonial architecture, and bustling markets—while grounding the action in realistic physics, a hallmark of the series. The score, potentially by Kenji Kawai, who composed for earlier films, will blend traditional Chinese motifs with intense, pulse-pounding rhythms, enhancing the emotional and action beats. Sound design, from the crisp snap of punches to the clatter of wooden dummies, will immerse viewers, best experienced in IMAX or Dolby Atmos.

Themes of Tradition and Legacy

Ip Man 5 is poised to explore themes of tradition versus modernity and East versus West, continuing the series’ tradition of weaving personal drama with historical context. The 1960s setting, marked by Hong Kong’s colonial tensions and the rise of triads, provides a rich backdrop for Ip Man’s fight to preserve Wing Chun’s integrity. The film may address the growing global influence of martial arts, with Bruce Lee’s emerging stardom as a narrative anchor, reflecting Ip Man’s legacy through his most famous student. The speculative plot of a foreign syndicate targeting martial arts schools aligns with the series’ recurring motif of defending Chinese culture, though official confirmation is pending.

Addressing Misinformation

The inclusion of Dwayne Johnson in the cast, as mentioned in your prompt, appears to be unverified, likely stemming from fan speculation or AI-generated content, similar to false claims about Scarlett Johansson in other films. No credible sources, including Mandarin Motion Pictures, IMDb, or Collider, confirm Johnson’s involvement. The confirmed cast centers on Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan, with potential appearances by Danny Kwok-Kwan Chan and others. Additionally, the specific plot involving a foreign criminal organization is not yet supported by official announcements, though it aligns with the franchise’s thematic focus on cultural resistance. Fans should rely on reputable sources like Variety, Collider, or Yen’s official Instagram for accurate updates.

Potential Shortcomings

Ip Man 5 faces the challenge of continuing a story after Ip Man’s death in Ip Man 4. A prequel or flashback structure risks feeling repeтιтive, and the film must balance new characters like Chan’s Master Liu with fan-favorite elements like Bruce Lee’s presence. The franchise’s pro-Beijing undertones, criticized during the 2019 Hong Kong protests, may resurface, potentially alienating some audiences. Additionally, integrating Chan’s comedic, acrobatic style with Yen’s grounded Wing Chun could disrupt the series’ tone if not handled carefully.

Why Ip Man 5 (2025) Is a Must-See

Ip Man 5 (2025) promises to be a landmark in martial arts cinema, uniting Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan in a historic on-screen collaboration. With Wilson Yip’s direction, stunning choreography, and a narrative that honors Ip Man’s legacy, the film delivers heart-pounding action and emotional depth. While Dwayne Johnson’s involvement remains unconfirmed, the verified cast and 1960s Hong Kong setting ensure a thrilling spectacle. Set for release in 2025, Ip Man 5 is a must-watch for fans of the franchise and martial arts enthusiasts, ideally experienced in theaters for its visual and auditory impact.

A Farmer’s Misplaced Hammer Led to the Largest Roman Treasure in Britain

November 16, 1992 was the day which changed Suffolk-resident Eric Lawes’ life in a huge way. What he thought would have been an innocent search for a hammer he had misplaced on his farm in Hoxne Village, Suffolk, England ended up bringing him much more than he had bargained for — namely, uncovering the hiding spot of a long-hidden treasure. Based on the Guardian’s coverage of the story, Eric Lawes had been previously gifted a metal detector upon his retirement as a parting token. He decided to put his retirement gift to good use in order to locate the hammer which he had had some trouble finding. According to a 2018 Smithsonian Magazine article, when the device started recording that there was a strong signal coming from the earth, he knew that he was about to discover something big. As he started digging, it soon became clear to him that he had unearthed a treasure trove.

The Guardian reports that, when Lawes saw that his preliminary digging had yielded a few gold coins and silver spoons, he immediately contacted both the local archaeological society and the police department. Archaeologists came to the property the following day and had the area of earth holding the treasure carefully sectioned-off and removed. Their hope was that at a later stage, in their laboratory, they could examined the items in order to identify both their age and how they were stored.

When all was said and done, close to 60 pounds of items made from silver and gold were found on the site. These included more than 15,000 Roman coins, 200 gold objects, and several silver spoons. For archaeologists, this find — which later became labeled as the Hoxne Hoard — was an incredible discovery. AP News reported that archaeologist Judith Plouviez was over-the-moon about the discovery, saying that it was “an incredibly exciting and amazing find.” What’s more, another archaeologist, Rachel Wilkinson, told Smithsonian Magazine that this discovery was “the largest and latest ever found in Britain.”

Ordinarily, archaeologists would use radiocarbon dating as a means of identifying the age of ancient relics. However, they couldn’t locate any suitable material from the haul. Consequently, they determined the age by examining writing on the coins, as well as the ruler carved into them, estimating that the treasure was probably buried in either 408 or 409 AD.

Roman-era archaeologist Peter Guest told Smithsonian Magazine that “if you look at them a little more carefully, then they should be dated to the period after the separation of Britain from the Roman Empire.” He offers as part of his evidence the fact that almost all of the coins found in the Hoxne Hoard were clipped – in other words, small chunks of their edges had been taken off. These clippings would have been used to create coins which were similar to the Roman coins of that era.

Guest has a logical reason for this, arguing that “The Roman Empire wasn’t supplying Britain with new gold and silver coins, and in light of that, the population tried to get over this sudden cutoff in the supply of their precious metals by making the existing supplies go further.”

Archaeologists also believe that the treasure belonged to a Romano-British family. During that time, considering that there was so much societal discord and upheaval, it was common for Romans who had settled in Britain to bury their most prized possessions.

That said, one archaeologist is of the belief that the hoard had a lot of sentimental value for the Romano-British family to whom it is believed to have belonged. In her book The Hoxne Late Roman Treasure: Gold Jewellery and Silver Plate, Catherine Johns claims that the manner in which the treasure was kept supported this claim. Some of the items which were recovered had been packaged in small, wooden boxes which were lined with leather. What’s more, pieces of wood, locks, and nails, among other things, surrounded the gold and silver pieces. This leads Catherine to assert that the package was carefully buried and not simply chucked away in a rush.

Interestingly enough, the items unearthed might shed some light on the identity of the family who owned them. They cite a gold bracelet bearing the inscription “UTERE FELIX DOMINA IULIANE,” which roughly translates to “use this happily Lady Juliane”. A second name “Aurelius Ursicinus” has also been discovered. This has consequently led some to believe that Juliane and Aurelius were the couple and the original owners of the treasure. That said, that has yet to be confirmed.

All in all, the discovery was a real treasure for archaeologists, and by extension, for Lawes. According to Smithsonian Magazine, in recognition of his discovery and willingness to contact authorities, the British government rewarded him with over £1.7 million, an amount which he shared with the farmer whose land was dug out in order to get the treasure. Funnily enough, apart from the treasure, Lawes also found his lost hammer — which now resides in the British Museum.
