The San Francisco 49ers have signed former Super Bowl champion punter Thomas Morstead to a contract, adding to their special-teams expertise.
Morstead, 39, had spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets before becoming a free agent and not being retained by the team.
Morstead finds a professional lifeline in the Bay Area after former Jets head coach Robert Saleh became the 49ers new defensive coordinator after being fired in New York last October.
The punter himself spoke on the signing, posting a selfie outside Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.
‘Grateful is an understatement!’ Morstead added in the caption.
Morstead is best known for his 12-season stint with the New Orleans Saints, winning the Super Bowl with the team in his rookie season in 2009.

Morstead had two stints with the Jets, the first being for part of the 2021 season, where he was released by the team after seven games before being picked up by the Atlanta Falcons.
He spent the 2022 season with the Miami Dolphins before finding his way back to the Big Apple.
More to come.
