New York Jets mercilessly cut star man after disastrous 2024 season

The New York Jets announced on Friday afternoon that they have parted ways with kicker Greg Zuerlein after a rough 2024 season.

Zuerlein, 37, has been in the league since 2012 and has played for three teams – including the Jets for the past three seasons.

However, this past season saw him hit career lows in field goals made, field goal attempts, field goal percentage, extra point makes, and extra point attempts.

As a result, the Jets sent out a ‘thank you’ post on social media, revealing the decision to move on.

While the Jets did not select a kicker in the 2025 NFL Draft, they did sign undrafted free agent Caden Davis from Ole Miss after the draft had concluded.

Additionally, the Jets signed kicker Anders Carlson in the middle of the season prior and elevated him to thee starting role.

Zuerlein was drafted by the then-St. Louis Rams in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Missouri Western State University.

A more than reasonable kicker through his first five seasons, Zuerlein’s peak came in 2017 when he hit 95 percent of his field goal attempts and 44-of-46 extra point attempts.

He earned first-team All-Pro honors and a Pro Bowl nod that season and finished as the NFL’s scoring leader.

The following season, Zuerlein knocked through the game-winning field goal in overtime of the NFC Championship to send the Rams to Super Bowl LIII. The kicker scored LA’s only points in ‘The Big Game’ in a 13-3 loss to the New England Patriots.

He spent one more season with the Rams before signing a three-year, $7.5m contract with the Dallas Cowboys in the offseason.

Zuerlein spent two seasons in Dallas before being cut in March of 2022. A few days later, he signed a one-year deal with the Jets.

He would continue to re-sign with New York on one-year deals, up until today.

This year, Zuerlein hit career lows in multiple categories. He only played eight games, hit just nine field goals (the only time he hasn’t kicked in the double digits) and had a career-worst accuracy mark of 60 percent. A knee injury in late October effectively ended his season.
