The Minnesota Vikings exceeded all expectations in 2024.
Behind the play of quarterback Sam Darnold, the team went 14-3 during the regular season and cobbled together impressive five-and-nine-game win streaks.
Not bad considering NFL.com predicted the team would win just 7.2 games.
Unfortunately, the fairytale year didn’t shake out how the Purple People Eaters dreamed. When all was said and done, Darnold and Co. fell 27-9 in a blowout NFC wild-card loss to the Rams.
Now, the Vikes are coming back with vengeance.
Although they lost Darnold to free agency — the veteran arm signed with the Seahawks — CFP national championship winner J.J. McCarthy will take his place. However, that’s not the only high-profile shuffle on this roster.
Big names Jonathan Allen, Javon Hargrave, Will Fries, Jordan Mason, Jeff Okduh, Ryan Kelly and Isaiah Rodgers all signed with the Vikings over the offseason and the club retained stars Aaron Jones, Byron Murphy Jr. and Theo Jackson.
“This is a new team, this is a new version of the Minnesota Vikings in 2025,” head coach Kevin O’ Connell said recently when speaking with the media. “I think it’s important that we really evaluate individually and collectively, what are we doing on a daily basis to make sure that we can reinvent and become what we’ve been, but push beyond that and really start — we’ve made it to the playoffs two out of the last three years. But when I look at it, and I really think about our football teams in those moments, were we a championship-worthy team? That’s for everyone to decide.”
If you want to see if the Vikings are a championship team (the franchise has never won a Super Bowl), tickets are available for all eight huge home games at US Bank Stadium on Vivid Seats.
That includes real tests against the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles (Oct. 19), AFC mainstays Baltimore Ravens (Nov. 9), the upstart Washington Commanders (Dec. 7) and tricky NFC North divisional rivals Detroit Lions (Dec. 25 Christmas matchup) and Green Bay Packers in the final game of the season on a date yet to be determined.
They’ll also be the first NFL team to play two consecutive overseas games when they take on the Steelers at Dublin’s Croke Park on Sunday, Sept. 28 and the Cleveland Browns at London’s Tottenham H๏τspur Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 5.
