A mysterious flying saucer-shaped object found at the bottom of the Baltic Sea last year may be the remains of a giant World War II device dropped there by Nazi Germany to disrupt Soviet submarine operations.

The mysterious object – nicknamed the “Baltic UFO” – was discovered by Swedish explorers at the bottom of the Baltic Sea in May 2011 using sonar equipment. It is circular in shape, about 60m in diameter.
Its unusual shape has sparked much speculation. Some have compared it to the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. Skeptics have suggested that the strange images may be due to improper calibration of the sonar and limitations of the technology.
However, Swedish naval official and war history expert Anders Autellus recently said that the object could be the anchor of a device designed to interfere with submarine radar signals and cause them to malfunction.
The object may have eroded over the decades, but pH๏τos of it taken by the Ocean X treasure-hunting expedition show what appear to be holes in the surface where it was connected to the device, Mr Autellus added.
Stefan Hogeborn, another member of Ocean X, agreed, saying it lay directly under a vital shipping route. German ships carried vital cargo through the Baltic during World War II, and Soviet submarines secretly entered the Baltic from the Gulf of Finland to attack them.
If the above hypothesis is true, this would be an important historical discovery, but there is also evidence against it.
The 60m diameter object that Ocean X found was larger than what the Germans and some other warring nations deployed during World War II. Peter Lindberg, another member of Ocean X, said he still believes the object was naturally formed.
Ocean X has returned to the exploration site with better and more sophisticated equipment after receiving funding from an undisclosed source. They hope the object will become a tourist attraction once it is recovered in the future.
