How Derek Carr spent his first day of retirement after shock decision to quit the NFL and pᴀss on $30m deal

Derek Carr won’t be relaxing in retirement if the first day of his post-NFL life is anything to go by.

The former Raiders and Saints quarterback shocked fans on Saturday by revealing that he would hang up his cleats rather than face an arduous return from shoulder injury.

A few hours after the announcement, Carr’s wife Heather posted a video on social media detailing the 34-year-old’s ‘first day of retirement’.

‘What are you going to do?’ she asked the quarterback, who announced: ‘We’re going to go outside and run as a family.’

The video then showed a topless Carr sprinting across his back yard, trailed by the family’s four children – Dallas, Deker, Deakon and Brooklyn.

The 34-year-old then headed to strengthen his legs in the gym, where his kids were also seen working out by playing basketball.

Carr later enjoyed a date with his wife, who bought him lunch, before he picked up his clubs and headed out to play golf.

‘I’m going to make the tour,’ the former quarterback joked as he loaded his bag into his truck. Carr is believed to have a handicap of around six.

After playing golf, Carr was back out in the yard with his kids, where he put them through baseball drills. They later enjoyed a family dinner before Carr headed out to flower the plants.

‘Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League,’ Carr said in his statement.

‘For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience.

‘It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.’

Carr began throwing again in March after his 2024 season ended December 8 due to a concussion and a left-hand injury.

The 34-year-old soon began experiencing discomfort in his throwing shoulder and subsequent medical scans revealed ‘significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff,’ according to the Saints.

Although surgery was an option, it would put his entire 2025 season in jeopardy and still couldn’t ensure a return to full strength.

So, after discussing with his wife, Heather, as well as the team and outside medical personnel, Carr decided to end his NFL career.

His sudden retirement comes after his recent revelation that Heather recently suffered a miscarriage. The former Fresno State star said they had been scheduled to travel to New Orleans to get a diagnosis on his shoulder injury when he had to rush his wife to the hospital.

Carr, who has been married to Heather since 2012, revealed that neither he nor his wife were aware they were expecting until the medics informed them that the miscarriage was behind her illness.
