New Orleans Saints should go all out for Aaron Rodgers after Derek Carr retirement, claims ex-NFL star

The New Orleans Saints have a major vacancy when it comes to a veteran quarterback and should fill it with free-agent Aaron Rodgers, claims former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Incumbent Saints starter Derek Carr shockingly retired from football on Saturday morning, citing a shoulder injury.

New Orleans now does not have a quarterback on its roster with an NFL victory. Rookie Tyler Shough was drafted by the team last month, while Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler are a combined 0-7 in the league.

Should the Saints go after the 41-year-old free agent, who is also a four-time NFL MVP, they would now have 156 NFL wins in their quarterback room.

Rodgers was not swept up in the free-agency frenzy that began in March, with the Pittsburgh Steelers looking to be his best option left, with the team yet to commit to him.

Now, a lifeline may have been given to Rodgers as he looks to continue his NFL career.

There will be talk of elevating Shough and giving him a chance from day one to be the starter.

Shough would be in a unique position, as New Orleans are thought to be good enough to win the NFC South, which is not typical for a rookie quarterback to be entering such a plum situation.

Bringing in Rodgers would give at least one year of experience to Shough to learn from one of the best quarterbacks of all-time.

Yet, on the field, Rodgers did not look like his Hall of Fame self during his entire two-season tenure with the New York Jets.

Other possibilities exist, such as an in-division trade for Kirk Cousins if the Saints are not thrilled with their in-house quarterback options for this season.
