A team of 12 explorers, led by archaeologist Lucia Castagna, entered the cave in 2017. They set out with a better understanding of the cave map than the team that found the skull in 2015.
Although it was found in 2015, the researchers at the time left the skull in the cave for research purposes. In 2017, the team of researchers brought the skull to the laboratory. They had to work very hard to reach the skull in the cave, 85 feet below the ground.
The skull was in a place that required a climb of at least 40 feet up the cave wall to reach. The skull was stuck in a crevice in the cave.
The first thing that came to light in the study was that the skull belonged to a woman, who was at least 5,000 years old. The researchers became even more curious to know what the lone woman was doing inside the cave.
The researchers noticed some abnormalities in the skull. There were holes in the skull. It was missing a jawbone and the flesh had been removed from the skull with something sharp. They came to this conclusion after very careful observation.
It is also known that she suffered from malnutrition for a long time before her death. Was the woman a victim of any supersтιтion? If so, was she tortured terribly before her death. Was she locked in this cave to die? And then after her death, was her flesh removed from her body according to some ritual?
All these questions filled the minds of researchers. In 2021, the mystery was finally solved to some extent.
They found many human bones at a distance from this cave. Later it was learned that it was a cemetery in the past. Previously, a stream of water used to enter the cave from its side. The skull somehow got separated from the stream and floated into the cave.
Then, either with the current or due to a landslide, the skull got stuck in that remote place inside the cave. It had been out of sight for so long. When it arrived at the place in 2015, it was discovered.
However, while the mystery of how the skull arrived in the cave has been solved, the questions of why he died and why the flesh was removed from his skull remain unanswered.
