Michael Jordan is scheduled to make an appearance at Blackhawks legend Chris Chelios’ jersey retirement on Sunday in Chicago a month after curiously skipping the Bulls’ Ring of Honor ceremony at United Center amid friction with former teammate Scottie Pippen.

Chelios revealed the news during Wednesday’s interview with WSCR-AM 670’s ‘Mully and Haugh Show.’

‘I’m going to have them try to bring everybody I possibly can that’s had an impact on me and obviously [Jordan] was a big part of my ’90s,’ Chelios said. ‘They’re going to be here to support me. I got a pretty good Rolodex over the span of my career so I’m loading up. This a last hurrah and I’m going to make it a good one.’

Jordan and Chelios grew close during their respective playing days in Chicago, so it’s not a surprise to see the Bulls legend on hand to see the retired defenseman’s No. 7 retired.

What is strange is that Jordan found time to make a rare appearance at his former place of business after skipping out on the Bulls’ ceremony entirely. In fact, both Jordan and Pippen missed the January festivities at United Center as the former’s son, Marcus, continues to date Larsa, the latter’s ex-wife.

The two six-time NBA champions both informed the team ahead of time, although no reason for their absence has been provided publicly. Jordan did record a video for the occasion, which was played for guests during the gala in Chicago.

‘I am so bummed that I can’t be there tonight,’ Jordan said in the video, which has since been shared on the team’s social media accounts. ‘Believe me, I am very grateful and very honored.’

The gala was also without retired Bulls power forward Dennis Rodman, whose absence actually was a surprise, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Sunday’s jersey retirement will take place before the Hawks face off with the rival Detroit Red Wings – Chelios’ other former team.

Furthermore, the Red Wings’ roster includes Patrick Kane, who is making his return to Chicago after winning three Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks.

Jordan isn’t exactly unfamiliar with hockey.

The Charlotte Hornets minority owner and NASCAR team co-owner previous had a 12-percent stake in the Washington Capitals, and said he was inspired to make a comeback attempt with the NBA’s Washington Wizards after seeing friend Mario Lemieux do the same with he Pittsburgh Penguins in 2000-01.

Pippen, meanwhile, is planning join his former Bulls teammates Horace Grant and Luc Longley for a series of public appearances in Australia to discuss Jordan, the club’s six NBA тιтles, and the controversial ESPN documentary about those teams, The Last Dance.

In partnership with Australia’s National Basketball League, the ‘No Bull’ tour begins in Tasmania on Friday before moving on to Melbourne and Sydney.

The trio of former Bulls recently appeared at the NBL’s award ceremony in Melbourne – the birthplace of the 55-year-old Longley.

Pippen, a Hall of Famer, was a member of all six of the Bulls’ тιтle-winning teams. Grant won three championships in Chicago before moving on to Orlando as a free agent in 1994, which is when Longley joined the Bulls en route to the club’s second three-peat of the decade.

The No Bull tour promises to revive recent criticism about the documentary, which Pippen and other former Bulls saw as being favorable to Jordan, who reportedly negotiated ‘final cut’ on the project.

‘I would say [the documentary was] entertaining, but we know, who was there as teammates, that about 90 percent of it [was] BS in terms of the realness of it,’ Grant said on ESPN 1000’s Kap and Co podcast in 2020.

‘It wasn’t real – because a lot of things [Jordan] said to some of his teammates, that his teammates went back at him. But all of that was kind of edited out of the documentary, if you want to call it a documentary.’

Grant goes on to reveal that he last communicated with Jordan three years ago via text and the pair’s fractious relationship was touched on during the series when Jordan accused Grant of being the one leaking information to journalist Sam Smith for the infamous Jordan Rules book that came out in 1992.

The book generated a lot of interest at the time with Jordan, arguably for the first time in his career at that stage, reflected in a less-than-impressive light in certain sections.

Pippen and Jordan have been at odds since the release of ESPN’s 2020 docuseries about the 1997-98 Bulls, The Last Dance, and things only got worse when Jordan’s adult son, Marcus, began dating Pippen’s ex wife, Larsa.
