Could Klay Thompson LEAVE the Warriors? Orlando Magic 'emerge as the frontrunners to sign the four-time NBA champion' if he leaves Golden State

Golden State Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson has been linked to the Orlando Magic as rumors about his future continue to unfold.

The 34-year-old signed a two-year, $48million extension with the Dubs over the summer. However, Thompson has been underwhelming for Golden State so far this season.

Thompson has been shooting career-low percentages from the floor and behind the three point arc. As a result, Warriors coach Steve Kerr brought him off the bench for the first time since his rookie season against the Utah Jazz last week.

With Golden State owner Joe Lacob saying that the team plans to get below the luxury tax line next season, whispers about a potential move for Thompson began to circulate. Amid all the rumors, Marc Stein reported that the Magic may be gearing up to place their bid.

A move to Orlando can be a win-win for both parties as the Magic lack three-point shooting but have no shortage in defensive pieces.

Thompson could help the Magic who rank 27th in three-point attempts and 29th in three-point percentage. Meanwhile, their No 5 ranked defense can make it easy to protect Thompson as he continuously declines.

Their defense is built around four starters in Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero, and Wendell Carter Jr. (along with reserve Jonathan Isaac), who can defend multiple positions. Additionally, eight players have given the Magic at least 750 minutes this season.

While it could be difficult for Thompson to return to the Bay Area with a hefty contract, Orlando -while still complicated- could offer a bit more of financial flexibility. The Magic’s balance will all depend on whether or not they resign Markelle Fultz and Gary Harris who are set to be free agents.

Veteran Joe Ingles has an $11m team option while Isaac’s $17.4m salary is not guaranteed. Nevertheless, the Magic can generate a max slot if needed while also having the ability to operate above the salary cap.

The rumors will remain rumors depending on what the Warriors decide to do with Thompson who has made his desire to retire in blue and gold known. Thompson told The Ringer’s Logan Murdoch that he is willing to play a smaller role if it kept him with the Warriors.

Halfway through the season, Golden State hold a 27-26 record, sitting tenth in the Western Conference. They will start the second half of their campaign against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday.
