The anticipation slowly built, with the realization that his dream finally came true sinking in.
Shedeur Sanders remained rather stoic while he spoke with Browns general manager Andrew Berry before starting to smile while he spoke to his new coach Kevin Stefanski.
And once the calls ended, he smiled from ear to ear.
The Browns revealed the behind-the-scenes footage of the calls to Sanders that ended his personal nightmare when he slipped all the way to the fifth round and pick No. 144 last week.
Cleveland had contributed to that lengthy wait, taking six players, including a quarterback, through the first four rounds, before finally taking a sH๏τ on Sanders.
Berry, whose job may be on the line this season, acknowledged the uneasy situation while speaking to his potential next starting quarterback.
It didn’t help that Sanders received a prank call earlier in the draft, which led to former Jets coach Jeff Ulbrich being punished due to his son’s involvement.
“I know it’s been a long weekend,” Berry said. “We’re going to take you off the board here, alright brother?
Sanders replied: “Yes sir, let’s do it.”
Berry then gave the newest Brown a pep talk.
“Hey, listen, you gotta come in, you gotta work hard, you gotta earn your job, earn your keep,” the Browns general manager said as cameras followed Sanders. “It doesn’t matter where you’re taken, it matters what you do from this point forward, alright? You’re talented, we spent a lot of time with you. You’re a good kid. Let’s get ready to go to work and all the people who pᴀssed on you, wrong.”
Sanders kept his response brief, saying just, “Yes sir, thank you.”
Stefanski then took the phone to offer some kind words, with Sanders perking up.
“Remember when I told you, the Lord works in mysterious ways, right?” Stefanski said. “It’s an opportunity. We’re going to get to work together, OK buddy?”
The clip then showed Sanders putting on a Browns hat while the crew around him cheered, with seemingly the camera man saying, “it’s a beautiful thing.”
Sanders later celebrated his new job with $1 million in Louis Vuitton cases, according to his brother, Deion Sanders Jr.
