After just a single season in the NFL, New York Jets quarterback Jordan Travis has told the team that he intends to retire.
Travis announced the decision on his social media accounts on Wednesday, posting a handwritten letter detailing why he’s decided to end his pro football career.
In an emotional post, Travis revealed that he had been advised to retire by his medical team after his rehab from a devastating leg injury in his final year of college wouldn’t heal in a way that could keep him on the football field.
‘As I reflect on my journey, I am overwhelmed with graтιтude,’ the letter began.
‘From having the opportunity to live out my dream at Florida State University to hearing my name called in the NFL Draft.
‘I am incredibly thankful for everyone who has poured into me throughout my life and career. To my family + friends – your unwavering support has meant everything to me.

‘To the coaches who believed in me and gave me a chance to play the game I love – Thank you.
‘To my teammates – thank you for pushing me, supporting me, and becoming family. I am forever grateful for the locker room memories + brotherhood we built.
‘To the entire New York Jets organization – thank you for believing in me and providing me with the opportunity to live out the ultimate dream.
‘On November 18th 2023, my life + career took an unexpected turn. I gave everything I had to the rehab process, but despite my efforts, my leg never responded the way we hoped. After much prayer + consultation with my Doctors + medical team, I have been medically advised to retire from the game I love so deeply.
‘It is crazy how fast life can change. This is not the ending I had ever imagined, but I do trust The Lord’s Plan above all else.’
Travis then went on to quote a bible verse, Proverbs 19:21, before concluding, ‘Thank you to everyone who’s been a part of the ride. With love + sincere graтιтude, #13.’
A native of West Palm Beach, Travis committed to Louisville and played the 2018 season with the Cardinals before transferring to Florida State.
After riding the bench in the 2019 season, he compiled a 3-3 record as a starter in 2020 when he took over the reins from James Blackman.

He split time with transfer McKenzie Milton throughout the 2021 season, but ended the campaign as the Seminoles’ leading pᴀsser.
Travis fully took over as starter in 2022 – tossing for over 3,000 yards and 24 touchdowns as the ‘Noles went 10-3.
In 2023, Travis was about to take Florida State to the College Football Playoff until that aforementioned game on November 18, 2023.
During that contest against North Alabama, the penultimate game of FSU’s regular season, Travis went down with a devastating ankle injury that ended his season. He won the ACC’s Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year awards.
Florida State, despite winning a rivalry game against Florida as well as the ACC Championship against Louisville, were controversially left out of the CFP as selection committee chair Boo Corrigan said the Seminoles were a ‘different team’ without Travis.
FSU became the only undefeated Power-5 conference champion in the history of the CFP to not be included in the playoff.
That injury was the final time Travis touched a football field. He was picked by the Jets with the 171st pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft and was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list to miss the entire season.
