Hunter Renfrow makes shock NFL return in stunning move

Wide receiver Hunter Renfrow has made a stunning return to the NFL just weeks after rumors speculated that he had retired.

After taking a year off from the NFL, the 29-year-old has inked a deal with the Carolina Panthers.

The South Carolina native has reached an agreement with his hometown Panthers on a one-year deal, according to NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

Refrow was out of the NFL last season after being released by the Raiders on March 13, 2024.

He made the Pro Bowl with 103 receptions for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns in 2021 but played a diminished role the next two seasons with a combined 61 catches for 585 yards and two scores in 27 games.

Renfrow had 269 catches for 2,884 yards and 17 touchdowns in 73 games (23 starts) through his five seasons with the Raiders.

Las Vegas drafted him in the fifth round in 2019 out of Clemson, where he helped the Tigers win national championships in the 2016 and 2018 seasons.

Through his first three seasons, Renfrow impressed reaching the Pro Bowl back in 2021.

However, under Josh McDaniels, he fell on the depth chart and ultimately, with limited snaps, was released at the end of the 2023 season.

The Panthers’ depth at wide receiver includes veteran Adam Thielen, Jalen Coker, 2024 first-round pick Xavier Legette and the No. 8 overall pick in Thursday’s draft, Tetairoa McMillan.

Following his release from the Raiders, it had been widely speculated that Renfrow had hung  his cleats up.

But the wideout shut down that rumor earlier this year when he insisted he was working on a way back to the NFL.

‘Just when I thought about making a comeback I get hit with this bombshell…… guess I shouldn’t have started working out again 2 months ago lol,’ Renfrow wrote in response to a post that indicated that the ex-Raider had retired.
