Aaron Rodgers’ close friend and ex-teammate reveals what Steelers must do to land quarterback amid standoff

Aaron Rodgers' close friend and ex-teammate reveals what Steelers must do to land quarterback amid standoff

Aaron Rodgers wants his next team to ‘roll out the red carpet for him,’ his close friend and ex-teammate Davante Adams has reportedly said.

Rodgers, 41, remains linked with the Steelers, who waited until the sixth round to select a quarterback (Will Howard) in the NFL Draft.

The former Green Bay and Jets pᴀsser said himself last week on the Pat McAfee Show that he had spoken with Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin ‘many times’, and did not rule out playing for the Steelers.

However, as relayed by The Athletic’s Mike Silver (who spoke with Adams), Rodgers is looking for a specific type of treatment in free agency.

‘The second thing Davante told me was, I think Aaron wants someone to roll out the red carpet for him,’ Silver said on the Scoop City podcast.

‘That is what he is looking for. I’m not sure if he would consider the Steelers doing that right now. I’m not positive how Aaron perceives that or how the Steelers perceive that.

Silver also added: ‘It felt to me like Aaron, based on what Davante said, would love to be swept off his feet.’

What that would exactly mean is unclear, as Rodgers said on McAfee that ‘it ain’t about the money’ and that he’d play well below market value at $10million.

However, his short time with the Jets saw many of his friends join him in New York, as the team signed former Packers receiver Allen Lazard in free agency, traded for Adams last year and tapped former Green Bay offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett for the same role in New York.

Adams also told Silver that Rodgers – who tossed 28 touchdowns last year – can still play at a high level, but that he was still affected by his Achilles injury in the early stages of last year.

Silver also discussed Rodgers’ breakup with the Jets, for which the pᴀsser previously said he ‘flew halfway across the country’ to be fired ’20 seconds’ into a conversation with new head coach Aaron Glenn and new GM Darren Mougey.

Rodgers added to McAfee that he had not been shown ‘ample respect’ in the meeting.

And after Adams learned how Rodgers’ split from the Jets was apparently conducted, he also vowed that he would not be returning to the team, Silver reported him as saying.

Rodgers and Adams were also reportedly set to go golfing at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas after his meeting with the Jets, though the four-time MVP actually cancelled the outing because he was reportedly in ‘such a bad mood.’

Adams is now a member of the Rams after the team handed him a two-year, $44million deal in free agency.

Rodgers, meanwhile, previously said there is ‘no ᴅᴇᴀᴅline’ on him making a decision and that he had been dealing with issues in his personal life.

Former Ohio State Buckeye Will Howard became the third quarterback on the Steelers roster over the weekend, joining Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson.
