Broncos’ Sean Payton issues warning to teams pᴀssing on Shedeur Sanders during unexpected NFL draft slide

Broncos coach Sean Payton’s team is in no need of a quarterback, with Bo Nix set under center for Denver for the foreseeable future.

He has, however, spent enough time around Shedeur Sanders to have an opinion on the Colorado quarterback’s incredible slide down draft boards, which entered into a third day after Sanders went unpicked in the second and third rounds Friday night.

“I saw [Shedeur] when he was in junior high, and then I saw him in high school and then I saw him when he was.a sophomore in high school when they were on their way to Florida,” Payton told reporters Friday, per ESPN. “He’s going to, like there’ll be this chip on his shoulder, and beware because this guy is going to play in this league.”

While plenty of team personnel offered up positive quotes on Sanders on Friday, it nevertheless spoke volumes that five quarterbacks have now been drafted ahead of a player who was at one point seen as a contender to go first overall.

Louisville’s Tyler Shough, Alabama’s Jalen Milroe and Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel all came off the board Friday.

“The time we spent with Shedeur and what he’s done throughout his college career is impressive,” Browns GM Andrew Berry, who took Gabriel 94th overall, told reporters. “He’s an impressive young man. He’s a really good quarterback.

“… I would also say this: There are four more rounds in the draft. And then maybe lastly is: It’s less about where you get picked than what you do after you get picked. That’s the most important thing.”

Impressed as Berry may or may not have been with Sanders, it wasn’t enough to make him the Browns’ selection.

Ditto Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who has a quarterback in Dak Prescott but whose team was suggested by ESPN’s Adam Schefter as a potential landing spot for Sanders going into Friday night.

“I watched two or three ballgames with [Shedeur],” Jones told reporters. “So, with my knowledge, I know where the character is there and, boy, it is great character. It is an unbelievable winning character for sports. OK? And so I can tell you that.

“I don’t know how many scouts have visited with me about the character of the Sanders group, but they should because it is absolutely up with the very best there’s ever been in the sport.”

Evidently, either not many quarterback-needy teams believe that, or those that do feel differently about Sanders’ talent.

“I think it’s hard for any of us to explain what other people are looking for. We focus on what we’re looking for,” Payton said. “It’s surprising [Sanders is still available].”
