Steelers owner Art Rooney II believes Aaron Rodgers wants ‘to come here’ with decision looming

The Steelers are expecting good news on Aaron Rodgers.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II said in a radio interview Friday that the embattled quarterback “does want to come here” and could let the club know his intentions in the near future.

“We’re still kind of getting the same signals that we’ve been getting recently,” Rooney said to Steelers Nation Radio.

“He does want to come here, so I do think we may get word soon.”

Pro Football Talk also cited a source saying Rodgers and the Steelers could make it official as soon as next week.

Rodgers’ time in New York came to an appropriately messy end when newly hired head coach Aaron Glenn cut him in February, a move that left Rodgers steaming after he flew across the country to meet with Glenn.

The 41-year-old Rodgers said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that Glenn did not show him “ample respect” by having him fly from California to meet instead of cutting him over the phone.

“That was kind of strange,” Rodgers said. “I think we are going to have this long conversation. I’ve flown across the country and 20 seconds in, he goes and he leans to the edge of his seat and says, ‘So you want to play football?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m interested.’ And he was like, ‘We’re going in a different direction at quarterback.’

“I was kind of shocked. Not shocked because I didn’t think it was a possibility, but shocked because I just flew across the country and you could’ve just told me this over the phone.”

On McAfree’s show, Rodgers acknowledged he spoke with the Giants, Steelers and Vikings, though the Steelers are the only one of those three who still appear open to bringing Rodgers in.

While Rooney left the door open to taking a quarterback on Day 3 of the draft, he said it would be a developmental pick if the Steelers went in that direction.

The Steelers pᴀssed on Shedeur Sanders twice in the first three rounds despite being linked.

“We really did not factor whether Aaron is coming or not,” Rooney said. “If we draft a quarterback — and we still might — probably not someone who’s going to start for us this year.

“It’s going to be somebody that will be developing and may play down the road. It’s not like somebody that’s going to have a big impact on this season.”
