Chicago Bears sign key man to new $20m deal ahead of crucial season with Ben Johnson as head coach

The Chicago Bears gave defensive ace TJ Edwards a two-year, $20million extension as they look to strengthen their defense for next season.

On Wednesday, sources told the NFL Network that the linebacker agreed to the extension after his second season in Windy City.

Additionally, nickel corner, Kyle Gordon also received an extension earlier this week, inking a three-year, $30m deal to stay in Chicago.

Edwards, 28, was an undrafted free agent who spent his first four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He joined the Bears in 2023 and tallied 284 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, and 14 quarterback hits since joining the team.

The Wisconsin product proved worthy of his extension after having a career-best season in 2024 with four sacks and 12 tackles for loss.

In 2024, the Lake Villa, Illinois product was voted captain by his teammates last season.

Edwards was set to make a base salary of $5.4m in 2025, the last year of his current contract. The extension now ties him to the Bears through the 2027 season.

The Bears are looking to turn around from a 5-12 season that saw them finish 4th in the NFC North.

The team went 4-2 in their first six games before losing ten straight. Still, they managed to win their season finale against Green Bay, 24-22.

Chicago also extended both defenders after hiring Ben Johnson as their new head coach in January. Johnson has been the offensive coordinator for the past three seasons.

He arrives in Chicago to fill the vacancy left by Matt Eberflus’ firing on November 29.
