Giants won’t ‘force’ QB pick as mᴀssive 2025 NFL Draft decision looms

Yes they will, but only if it makes sense.

And that means there is a decent chance the Giants do not come out of the 2025 NFL Draft with their future franchise quarterback.

“If the value matches up with what we have on a player, there’s an opportunity to take any position,” Giants general manager Joe Schoen said Wednesday at his annual pre-NFL draft press conference. “Not gonna force it if it’s not the right value. If the board lines up and we’re on the clock and that’s the position we want to go with we’ll go with it.”

Not gonna force it is the key phrase here. The Giants own the No. 3 overall pick and there is certainly a good chance that Shedeur Sanders will be on the board when they are on the clock.

The expectation is quarterback Cam Ward goes No. 1 to the тιтans and either cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter or edge rusher Abdul Carter goes No. 2 to the Browns — at this point, it appears the Browns are leaning toward taking Hunter.

Right now, and, most likely, next Thursday when the draft opens up, it appears as if the Giants will pᴀss on Sanders and take either Hunter or Carter — whichever player is there for the taking.

“We like who will be there,” Schoen said of the top three prospects who will be available for the Giants.

Schoen this offseason signed 36-year old Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback and 31-year old Jameis Winston as the backup, with Tommy DeVito, 26, remaining on the roster. These moves decrease the urgency Schoen has felt to locate a young quarterback for the future. He still wants one, but only if he believes there is one out there in this draft.

“With the signing of those two players I think we put ourselves in position where I don’t think that’s mandatory or something that we have our feet at the fire and we have to do,” Schoen said of selecting a quarterback in this draft. “The two guys we signed have played a lot of ball, they’ve got a lot of skins on the wall and I do think we’ve upgraded that room compared to where it was a year ago. Tommy’s still in there and he’s won games for us too and he’s still developing. We’re happy with the makeup of the room right now.”

Right now, though, is not the future, meaning the most important position on the field will be unsettled in 2026 if the Giants do not select a quarterback in this draft.

“Where we are, yeah, you’d like to have a young, franchise quarterback,” Schoen said. “I think every general manager — everybody wants that. But the value has to be right. It’s not like it doesn’t matter if you get that one wrong … you just got to get that right.”

To make sure the evaluations are as complete as possible, the Giants are headed to Boulder, Colo. later this week to conduct a private workout with Sanders. They also have private workouts with Tyler Shough (Louisville) and Jalen Milroe (Alabama) on the docket.

“We’re gonna run out the sH๏τ clock here, we have until next Thursday,” Schoen said.

The Giants certainly will be looking to add a quarterback at some point in the draft and it will be a surprise if they do not. Schoen has yet to select a quarterback in any of his first three drafts running the show for the Giants. He did not agree that he is under pressure to do so.

“If there’s not one or you don’t perceive there to be one or it’s not available when you pick, that’s out of your control,” Schoen said. “Yeah, we’d love to have one if there’s one available.”
