Ex-NFL star Vontae Davis’ cause of death ruled undetermined

A little over one year after ex-NFL corner Vontae Davis’ sudden death, the cause of death has been ruled “undetermined,” the Broward County (Florida) Medical Examiner said in an autopsy report on Friday, per multiple reports.

The medical examiner said they were unable to determine the cause and manner of death for Davis, 35, who died on April 1, 2024.

“Due to the totality of the circumstances, including inconsistencies between the scene and the findings at autopsy, the cause and manner of death in this case is best classified as undetermined,” the autopsy report said, according to ESPN.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that Davis had amphetamines/methamphetamines and cannabinoids in his system at the time of his death and that he also had cuts, bruises and burn marks on on his body.

The outlet added that his brother, ex-NFL тιԍнт end Vernon Davis, said in the autopsy that he had “extensive history” with drugs and alcohol.

According to the Palm Beach Post, Davis’ ex-wife, Megan Harpe, said the defensive back suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and had been dismissed, according to her, early from treatment in Los Angeles.

The outlet added that a CTE test was not performed on Davis after his death to confirm a diagnosis.

At the time of his death last spring, no foul play was suspected after Davis’ body was found at his grandmother’s house in Southwest Ranches.

Davis had a 10-year career in the league after he was selected 25th overall by the Dolphins in the 2009 NFL draft.

He spent three seasons with Miami before heading to Indianapolis to play for the Colts for six seasons, earning two Pro Bowl nods in 2014 and 2015.

He wrapped up his final year with the Bills, making just one tackle before retiring in the middle of the one game he appeared in during the 2018 season.

He finished his career with 22 interceptions.

After the news of his death broke last year, many in the football world were saddened by the loss.

“Extremely saddened to hear of the pᴀssing of Vontae Davis. A great guy, teammate, player. My prayers to Vontae’s family,” Colts head coach Jim Irsay wrote on X then.

Former punter Pat McAfee, who played with Davis from 2012-16 in Indianapolis, said a few touching words about his former teammate during an April 2024 episode of the “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“Vontae was an incredibly cool dude, good guy, nice guy, upbeat guy, energetic guy,” McAfee said. ”I think what we’ll remember him for is being an incredibly cool teammate in that locker room and being a guy that all of us enjoyed being around on a daily basis.”
