Cowboys land QB Joe Milton III from Patriots after intense trade buzz

The Cowboys added some quarterback insurance Thursday.

Dallas is acquiring second-year quarterback Joe Milton III from the Patriots, according to multiple reports.

Dallas sent a fifth- and seventh-round pick to New England in exchange, NFL.com reported.

It comes following the departure of Dak Prescott’s longtime backup, Cooper Rush, to the Ravens earlier in the offseason.

Rush, 31, had been on his second stint with the Cowboys before agreeing to a two-year, $6.2 million deal with Baltimore as a top option to back up Lamar Jackson.

Milton, a sixth-round pick out of Tennessee in last year’s NFL draft, had been at the center of trade buzz for much of the offseason.

Earlier this week, it was reported New England had received “multiple trade inquiries” about the 25-year-old quarterback, who backed up Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett.

“We’re not done yet. We still got some things that are outstanding that we’re trying to get done,” Cowboys exec Stephen Jones said earlier this week, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Milton was also itching for a fresh start, with a source telling Mᴀss Live this week he “would prefer to be on a roster that best gives him a chance to compete for the starting job.”

Milton saw regular-season action in January during the Patriots’ season finale against the Bills, throwing for 241 yards and a touchdown in the 23-16 win. He also rushed for a score.

The Cowboys, coming off a forgettable and injury-plagued 7-10 campaign, had been looking to add depth behind Prescott, who was shut down for the year in November after undergoing hamstring surgery.

Third-string quarterback Trey Lance is currently a free agent and has drawn interest from the Canadian Football League.
