Raiders GM admits why he wants Ashton Jeanty with sixth pick of NFL Draft as Tom Brady's rebuild continues

Anyone looking for insight into the Las Vegas Raiders’ draft board should direct their inquiries to Jack Spytek, the son of team general manager, John.

‘My oldest son has made it no secret that if we don’t pick Ashton Jeanty at 6 that he’s walking out of the family and he’s gonna find somebody else, probably whoever takes Ashton,’ John told Sirius/XM of his 10-year-old. ‘Jack is motivated by fantasy football and touchdowns.’

If Jack’s looking for touchdowns, Jeanty would be the right pick at No. 6 overall in this month’s NFL Draft. The former Boise State running back scored 56 over his three seasons with the Broncos, including 29 rushing scores in 2024 alone.

And it’s not just touchdowns. Jeanty gained 2,601 rushing yards on the season, second all-time to only the great Barry Sanders’ performance at Oklahoma State back in 1988. Sanders’ 2,628-yard effort was good enough to earn the Heisman that year, while Jeanty finished second in 2024 behind Colorado’s cornerback-receiver Travis Hunter.

It remains unclear if new coach Pete Carroll or minority owner Tom Brady are on board with Jeanty at No. 6, but Jack has already made his case with majority owner Mark Davis.

‘He walked right into our building and basically told Mark Davis: ‘If my dad doesn’t take Ashton Jeanty, he’s doing a bad job,’ Spytek said.

The Raiders executive’s son might be following in his own footsteps. According to Spytek, young Jack watches highlights on YouTube, albeit with his father cautioning him in the background.

‘You’ve got to watch all the plays,’ Spytek said. ‘Don’t be swayed by highlights.’

A former scout, Spytek is also a bit torn over that life for his son, who is still a decade away from the job market, after all.

‘I love that my son loves the draft process at 10-years-old and maybe is starting to fall in love with the scouting process,’ Spytek said. ‘I hate it, too, because the life that he’s signing up for.

Spytek has been busy this offseason. Not only did he replace the fired Antonio Pierce’s coaching staff with Carroll’s, but he’s also acquired a starting quarterback in Geno Smith.

Smith previously played under Carroll in Seattle, and now appears headed for a contract extension in Las Vegas.

‘We really look forward to having him not just this year, but for the years to come,’ Spytek told reporters at the NFL’s annual spring meeting in Palm Beach, Florida.

Asked about a potential contract extension, Spytek told reporters: ‘We’re working on it.’

Spytek has stated that Smith’s presence does not preclude the Raiders from drafting a quarterback later this month.
