Micah Parsons, Jerry Jones at odds over ‘backdoor’ contract negotiations

Even in Jerry World, Micah Parsons wants nothing to do with a back-alley deal for a new contract.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters that he did not know the name of Parsons’ agent, David Mulugheta, adding the agent won’t be a factor in the negotiations.

“The agent is not a factor here or something to worry about. And I don’t know his name,” Jones told reporters. “The point is, I’m not trying to demean him in any way, but this isn’t about an agent. The agent don’t have one thing to do about what we’re doing when we get on a football field against a team. Micah does. To the degree I’m involved, I do.

“I’m not demeaning the agent; I’m just saying anybody can do this. And that’s talk directly to a player. Frankly, most people that negotiate with me will tell you that it was better off negotiating [with me]. This is not uncommon. Negotiated directly as far back as Emmett [Smith], Deion [Sanders] and by the way maintained a relationship that lasted well after their playing days.”

Parsons did not take kindly to the words from Jones, taking to X to relay there will be no backroom negotiating that cuts out his agent.

“Facts!! David is the best and I will not be doing any deal without David Mulugheta involved! Like anyone with good sense I hired experts for a reason. There is no one I trust more when it comes to negotiating contracts than David! There will be no backdoors in this contract negotiation,” Parsons posted.

Parsons, who is on the final year of his rookie contract, is expected to get a contract that eclipses the deal Myles Garrett just got, which averages $40 million per year and includes $123 million in guaranteed money over four years.

The standoff could get uncomfortable with the Cowboys, who just signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a mᴀssive contract extension that has a $60 million-per-season average, the highest in the NFL.

Dallas is expected to be saddled with a terrible contract situation with just $39 million in cap space entering next season, per Over The Cap, and a big extension for Parsons is expected to take a big chunk of that.
